LAKE WORTH-Park Vista sophomore Autumn Wojack thought she would be nervous taking the court against John I. Leonard Tuesday night, but Wojack and her lady Cobra teammates started having fun from the opening minutes and never stopped.
Led by Wojack’s 13-points and five steals, Park Vista had just enough to hold off the upset-minded John I. Leonard 40-37 at Park Vista High School.
“I’m very proud of the girls, coach Erin Pokabola of Park Vista said. They played as a team and did everything I asked them to do.”
The lady Cobras (2-0) started quickly against the Lancers (0-2), building an 8-1 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a dominating defense. Park Vista continued its onslaught in the second quarter, racing to an 11-point lead settling for a 25-13 halftime advantage.
Led by the tandem of Mejia Lourdes and Mayrobin Salinas, the lady Lancers overcame the sluggish first half and scored 10 unanswered points to close the gap 36-35 with under 40 seconds left of regulation. Sophomore Christina Saint-Pierre, who finished with 10-points and six rebounds, would then hit a two-pointer to slow down John I. Leonard’s run.
Lourdes led John I. Leonard with 13-points and seven rebounds and Salinas contributed 11-points and six steals. The duo combined to shoot 10-of-17 from the court.
Wojack, who shot 50 percent (3-of-6) from the free throw line, hit two free throws coming out of a timeout with five seconds left to seal the victory.
“I was kind of nervous, Wojack said. I knew I had to make both free throws to win the game for the team and I did, but now we have to focus on our next game against Seminole Ridge.”
