Week eight of the high school football season in the Volunteer State was filled with scoring shootouts, especially in west Tennessee where two teams that scored 42 points and one team that scored 41 got beat.
Middle Tennessee had a 48-46 game, as well, making four games where both teams scored in the 40s.
Weekly Highlights
Fast-Break Football, Part I – Moore County 48, Zion Christian 46
In a Region 6-1A shootout in Lynchburg, the home team rushed for 540 yards. Three running backs, Dalton Holt (268 yards, 4 TDs), Daniel McGee (148, 2 TDs) and Matthew Hammers (127) all went over the 100-yard mark and combined for 543 yards on the ground to help Moore County hold off Zion, 48-46.
Zion Christian provided offensive fireworks of its own as quarterback Daniel Pugh threw for 440 yards and three touchdowns with favorite target Ben Wahlman hauling in 10 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
Fast-Break Football, Part II – Dyersburg 42, Crockett County 41 (3 overtimes)
The 7-3A rivals put on a show last Friday night playing in a three-overtime game that neither team deserved to lose.
The game ended when Crockett County attempted to convert a two-point conversion for the win, but quarterback Drew Speaker was sacked.
The offensive star for Dyersburg was running back Jason Click, who rushed for four touchdowns including the game winner.
Fast-Break Football, Part III – Trinity Christian 44, Fayette Academy 42
In yet another west Tennessee scoreboard stuffer, Trinity Christian held off a hard-charging Fayette Academy.
Running back Josh Lenoir led the way for Trinity Christian with four rushing touchdowns. Fayette Academy stormed back from a 44-34 deficit behind the arm of quarterback Davis Cocke, who threw three touchdowns and 322 yards in the defeat.
Fast-Break Football, Part IV – Westview 49, Gibson County 42
After the first quarter, this game looked like it was headed for the mercy rule as Westview led 28-7.
The Chargers pushed the lead to 49-28 early in the fourth quarter as both J.C. Griggs and Chris Gardner had three touchdowns, but Gibson County running back Sherrod Johnson (126 yards, three touchdowns) put up two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 49-42.
Westview put the game away as it recovered an onside kick with 45 seconds left in the game.
Friday Night Stat Stuffers
Ethan Tummins, QB, McEwen - Rushed for 271 yards on 25 carries and scored twice in 38-28 win over Eagleville.
Trox Greenwade, QB, White House - Passed for school record 395 yards and five touchdowns in 49-35 win over DeKalb County.
Justin Williams, RB, Davidson Academy - Ran for 319 yards and six touchdowns in 48-14 win over SBEC.
Dalton Holt, RB, Moore County – Ran for 268 yards and four touchdowns in 48-46 win over Zion Christian.
Daniel Pugh, QB, Zion Christian - Passed for 440 yards on 34-of-38 passing and three touchdowns in 48-46 loss to Moore Co.
Ben Wahlman, WR, Zion Christian - Caught 10 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns in 48-46 loss to Moore County.
Davis Cocke, QB, Fayette Academy - Passed for 322 yards on 20 of 27 passing and three touchdowns in 44-42 loss to Trinity Christian.
Joey Skogen, RB, McCallie - Rushed 18 times for 214 yards in a 21-7 win over Knoxville Webb.
Nic Hughes, QB, Boyd Buchanan - Threw for 304 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-3 win over Sequatchie County.
Gabriel Hunter, RB, Kingsbury – Rushed 19 times for 235 yards in a 32-9 loss to Memphis East.
Demario Carter, RB, Sheffield - Rushed 40 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns in 32-26 win over Frayser.
Bryson Crowder, RB, Liberty - Ran for 235 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-34 win over Hardin County.
Will Poe, RB, Midway - Rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns on only 10 carries in 21-9 win over Harriman.
Jordan Greenway, QB, Greeneville - Threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns while also adding a rushing touchdown in 34-31 win over Morristown West.
James Sams, RB, Kingston - Rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while adding a fumble return for touchdown on defense in 41-21 win over Scott County.
