DURHAM, N.C. -- USA Baseball and MaxPreps announced on Monday, the USA Baseball MaxPreps Pitcher and Player of the Week Award winners for the week of May 23, 2016, bringing national recognition to the top-performing high school athletes in the country.
Representing eight national regions, -- Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest and West -- players are selected based upon stats that are submitted to MaxPreps.com by coaches and team administrators. For players to be nominated each week, their coach must enter the athlete's game stats into MaxPreps by Sunday evening. High school coaches may obtain an access code to enter stats for their teams at maxpreps.com/cl.
The Southeast Region has completed its season and does not have a pitcher or player of the week.
The winners for USA Baseball MaxPreps Player of the Week Award are as follows:
Great LakesPitcher of the Week: Drew Ashley threw a no-hitter for Evansville Memorial High School (Evansville, IN.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Great Lakes Pitcher fo the Week. Ashley, a junior, struck out 12 batters and surrendered just one walk in seven innings for the win.
Player of the Week: Fox Leum hit .833 for Minnetonka High School (Minnetonka, Minn.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Great Lakes Player fo the Week award. Leum, a senior, hit three home runs and tallied seven RBIs. He finished with week with a 2.500 slugging percentage.
Mid-AtlanticPitcher of the Week: Hanks Avenger pitched a complete-game one-hitter for Holly Hill Academy (Holly Hill, S.C.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Week. Avenger, a sophomore, struck out 14 batters, and surrendered just one walk in the win.
Player of the Week: Greg Wenclawiak hit .750 for MAST Community Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Player of the Week award. Wenclawiak, a junior, went 6-for-8 with five runs scored and six RBIs.
MidwestPitcher of the Week: Dennis Yingling pitched a no-hitter for Lindbergh High School (St. Louis, Mo.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Midwest Pitcher of the Week. Yingling, a junior, struck out 11 batters and surrendered just one walk in seven innings.
Player of the Week: Drake Parker tallied seven RBIs for Braymer Public School (Braymer, Mo.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Midwest Player of the Week award. Parker, a senior, went 4-for-7 with one run scored on the week.
NortheastPitcher of the Week: Chris Mormile pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball for Wildwood High School (Wildwood, N.J.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northeast Pitcher of the Week. Mormile, a senior, struck out 18 batters and gave up just one unearned run in the victory.
Player of the Week: Josh Navarra went 8-for-11 at the plate for Immaculate Heart Central Schools (Watertown, N.Y.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northeast Player of the Week award. Navarra, a senior, tallied five RBIs and scored five runs.
NorthwestPitcher of the Week: Justin Herbert struck out 19 batters for Sheldon High School (Eugene, Ore.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northwest Pitcher of the Week. Herbert, a senior, gave up just one run in nine innings with two walks to finish the week with one win.
Player of the Week: Shawn Gonzalez went 9-for-11 for Lathrop High School (Fairbanks, Alaska) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northwest Player of the Week award. Gonzalez, a senior, tallied eight RBIs and scored eight runs and finished the week with a .846 on-base percentage.
Southwest

Player of the Week: Tanner Hamblin went 8-for-15 with six runs scored for Salem Hills High School (Salem, Utah) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southwest Player of the Week award. Hamblin, a senior, hit two home runs and tallied six RBIs.
West
Pitcher of the Week: Brett Super threw a complete-game no-hitter for Sage Hill School (Newport Beach, Calif.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps West Pitcher of the Week. Super, a junior, struck out 10 batters and surrendered just three walks.
Player of the Week: Aharon Modlin hit two home runs for Woodbridge High School (Irvine, Calif.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps West Player of the Week award. Modlin, a senior, went 6-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs scored on the week.
