Renardo Sidney chose the University of Southern California as his long-awaited college destination Sunday, while one of the nation’s most prominent sophomores, 6-7 Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick (Elizabeth, N.J.), may be out for the year due to a possible broken foot.
Sidney, a 6-foot-11, 256-pound senior from Fairfax (Los Angeles, Calif.), picked the Trojans over UCLA, Memphis, Virginia and Mississippi State. He has been a dominant scorer and rebounder throughout the year while keeping Fairfax among the nation’s elite teams.
However, he has not yet passed the SAT, which he will be taking in March, to qualify for a scholarship.
Gilchrist, meanwhile, was injured on the last play of Friday’s practice. His foot is in a soft cast and he will consult with a foot specialist on Monday. The Celtics routed Roselle Saturday, 75-37, in their first outing without him.
