Gonzaga senior Cedrick Lindsay verbally committed to the University of Richmond over the weekend, choosing the Spiders' basketball program over schools like William & Mary, Niagara, Temple, LaSalle, Brown and Jacksonville.
Lindsay, a 6-foot, 190-pound guard, has been a major contributor for the Eagles over the past two years.
"He felt like it was a great combination of academics and athletics," Gonzaga Coach Steve Turner said. "Cedrick took an unofficial visit and it was one of the schools that jumped in early and recruited him hard. He had a good vibe with the head coach and the assistants there."
Turner believes that Lindsday should get some floor time as a freshman at both guard spots and will have a better chance to run the point as a sophomore when David Gonzalvez graduates.
"He's definitely excited," Turner added. "He agonized about the whole [recruiting] process and now feels like he has the weight of the world off his shoulders. He can play his senior season without the recruiting pressure. He always wanted to commit before senior year."
Turner said that Lindsay's style of play reminds him of Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson, who spent most of his playing career with the Detroit Pistons. On the collegiate level, Turner compared Lindsay to Stephon Curry, who was drafted by the Golden State Warriors this past summer after a spectacular career at Davidson.
"He makes his team better," Turner said. "He gets everyone involved."
Gonzaga, who fell just short of repeating as WCAC champions last year, already had one player going to play Division I basketball in Tyler Thornton (Duke).
Thornton and Lindsay could be joined on the collegiate ranks by fellow classmate Malcolm Lemmons, who currently holds offers from schools like Vermont, Loyola, Bucknell, Robert Morris, UMBC, Stony Brook, Brown, Princeton and Colgate.
Turner expects Lemmons to make a decision before the start of the season. Fellow senior Danny Williams has also received interest from some Division III schools.
In other WCAC basketball news, Carroll senior Ahmad George verbally committed to Stony Brook last week.
