NorCal news and notes...* De La Salle, or DeLaStomp as called by MaxPreps columnist
Mitch Stephens, nearly got derailed. The Spartans squeezed out a 21-13 victory over a St. Mary's of Stockton, a team that got rolled by De La Salle last season and lost 28-21 to small-school Central Catholic heading into Concord.
Tiapepe Vitale rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown, but it was an otherwise frustrating night for De La Salle with coach Bob Ladouceur saying afterward his team was "atrocious offensively." St. Mary's had 102 of its yards coming on the final drives and managed just 65 yards rushing on 30 carries. De La Salle is unbeaten against NorCal competition dating back to 1991, going 224-0-2.
* In a game expected to be a fight to the finish, Granite Bay bombed Vacaville 47-21, leading 40-6 at the half to snap the Bulldogs' 14-game winning streak. It was a meeting of defending Sac-Joaquin Section champions — Granite Bay in Division I and Vacaville in D-II.
Tony Ellison scored two touchdowns, including a 69-yard touchdown pass from
Grant Caraway, and
John Cooley scored on two short runs for the Grizzlies, who came in 0-2 after losing to Southern California powers Westlake and Oaks Christian. The series between Granite Bay and Vacaville, which started last decade, stands at 4-4-1.
* A missed extra point late doomed previous No. 9 Palo Alto in a 28-27 loss to Mitty. The Monarchs had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Palo Alto quarterback
Keller Chryst had a touchdown pass. Chryst had coaches from USC and Stanford at the game, and he attended Saturday's USC-Stanford game to watch programs that have both offered him a scholarship.

Jeffrey Prothro of Logan, emerging fast at quarterback, threw five touchdown passes in a 48-14 rout of Heritage.
* Folsom handed Deer Valley of Antioch its first loss, 50-38, in a meeting of impressive quarterbacks. Folsom was led by
Jake Browning, he of the 10-touchdown debut to his varsity career in an opening win over Woodcreek (Roseville). Browning passed for 377 yards and a score.
Nsimba Webster of Deer Valley tossed four touchdown passes and also flustered Folsom with his feet.
* In four games this season, Browning has passed for touchdowns of 10, 4, 2 and 1. Slowing down? Not exactly. Just a better running game to balance things out.
* Mt. Eden quarterback Guadelupe Rico was released from Kaiser Hospital in Hayward late Friday night after sustaining an injury during a sack late in a 25-20 loss to Oakland. He was carried off the field and taken by ambulance to the hospital, suffering a contusion to his back, according to Phil Jansen of the East Bay Prep Corner.
* Proof that even stars are held accountable: Concord tailback Olito Thompson, who set NorCal rushing records last fall, sat the first quarter of Friday's game against Bethel of Vallejo for missing a practice. He rushed for 131 yards and three scores in a 50-13 rout.
* Previous No. 18 Palma (Salinas) lost to St. Joseph (Santa Maria) 22-7 and has struggled to score this season, never mind the massive offensive line and host of returners.

Capuchino (San Bruno) rushed for a Bay Area record 494 yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries in a 35-28 victory over Gunn (Palo Alto) in a nonleague game. That total is second all time in Northern California, according to the Cal-Hi Sports record book, to the 555-yard effort of Dallas Bernstine for Bethel (Vallejo) in 2001. A year after rushing for 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns, the 6-foot, 195-pound senior has no scholarship offers. Yet.
* Grant (Sacramento) has for decades invited former players to return to coach football. This includes Ed Coleman, a Pacers star in the 1990s who has been on the coaching staff the last nine seasons. On Monday, Sacramento police officers announced that Coleman shot and killed his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide that rocked the region and crushed the Grant campus.
