Hitting 20 home runs in a high school baseball season has become an increasingly difficult task. This is why
Christian Howe's performance this year really stands out.
The
Danville (Ky.) senior hit 21 home runs in 2021, becoming the fifth high school player in the past decade to club 20 or more in a season. Howe also had a nation-best 80 RBI while batting .547. The Admirals' slugger is the MaxPreps Small School National Player of the Year.
In addition to leading the nation in those statistical categories, he helped lead Danville to a pair of impressive accomplishments. Along with fellow MaxPreps Small School All-American
Ethan Wood, helped Danville hit a national best 86 home runs — a total that hasn't been achieved at the national level in over a decade.
Howe also helped Danville, with an enrollment right around 500, advance
to the semifinals of the state tournament. Kentucky holds just one state
tournament for baseball and does not break it down into enrollment
divisions.
The Danville tandem leads an impressive group of 60 players on the 2021 MaxPreps Small School All-America Team. The squad includes potential picks in the upcoming MLB Draft, starting Sunday, as well as sons of former Major League players.
It was a year of firsts at Hayfield (Minn.) where the Vikings won their first ever state championship in basketball during the winter and followed up with their first ever baseball championship in the spring.
Coach Kasey Krekling guided Hayfield to a 26-0 record and a No. 20 ranking in MaxPreps Small School National Baseball Ratings. The Vikings had to overcome a 4-0 deficit in the championship game in order to claim the title. Krekling has been selected as the MaxPreps Small School Coach of the Year.
In order for a school to qualify as a "small school," it must play in a state enrollment division that generally includes schools with an enrollment of less than 1,000 students.
