Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020-21 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Lamar Washington of
Jefferson (Portland) is the 2020-21 MaxPreps Oregon High School Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-foot-4 junior guard helped the Democrats go 14-3 en route to the Blue Bracket championship, Oregon's version of postseason play in the pandemic-shortened spring season.
Washington averaged 30.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.7 steals per contest while playing in all 17 games for Jefferson.
The rising hoops prospect became the fifth player in Oregon large school history to average over 30 points per contest, opening the season with 52 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in a 103-76 victory.
Washington received offers to play college football from programs like Nebraska, UCLA and USC but appears to be making a full transition to the hardwood. He's expected to transfer to hoops power AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) next season and is beginning to attract major interest as a basketball prospect as well.
