Top 50 high school football scoreboard: No. 1 IMG Academy wins big in season opener

Jake Garcia and Valdosta outscore Warner Robins 25-12 in second half to pull off comeback victory.

No. 1 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) looked the part in an impressive 49-13 season opening road win over Venice (Fla.) on ESPNU. Senior Michigan commit J.J. McCarthy completed 23 of 37 passes for 333 yards and five touchdowns in his Ascender debut.

IMG is off next week then hosts No. 28 Edgewater (Orlando) on Sept. 17.

USC commit Jake Garcia made his Valdosta (Ga.) debut and led the No. 40 team in the country to a thrilling 28-25 win over Warner Robins. After trailing 13-3 at halftime the Wildcats outscored the Demons by 13 points in the second half to pull off the victory in Rush Propst's first game as head coach for the historic program.

No. 5 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) rolled to a 51-13 win in its season opener against Jones County (Gray).

The only Top 50 team to lose on Friday was No. 34 La Salle (Cincinnati), who fell to St. Xavier (Cincinnati) 24-10. The Bombers bounced back nicely after a heartbreaking loss in overtime to Brownsburg (Ind.) last week. Brogan McCaughey threw for over 300 yards and three scores in the win.

No. 14 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah), No. 20 Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.), No. 23 Pickerington Central (Pickerington, Ohio), No. 27 Mentor (Ohio), No. 33 Hoover (Ala.), No. 42 Bryant (Ark.), No. 45 Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.) and No. 50 Massillon Washington (Ohio) all won Friday night.

The two Saturday games featured No. 9 Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.) and No. 30 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio).

Jacurri Brown and the Vikings rolled to a 35-21 season opening win over Archer (Lawrenceville) in the Corky Kell Classic and expect Archbishop Hoban (Akron, Ohio) to jump in the Top 50 after shutting out St. Edward 35-0 in one of the most impressive wins of the weekend.
