We've seen several
hook-and-ladder plays beautifully executed so far this season.
But how about a double
hook-and-ladder?
That's what
Olympus (Salt Lake City) pulled off Friday night with less than two
seconds remaining to defeat Springville 43-37.
It
started when quarterback
Chase Manning -- yes, Manning -- took the snap and dropped
back.
He hit senior receiver
Spencer Williams going across the middle, right to left.
Running from left to right was senior
Connor Haller, who took a pitch from Williams. A second later,
Williams dished it to senior
Coleman Meier, and Meier raced down the sideline for a stunning
touchdown.
Turns out the idea was hatched
recently.
"We've had it in our offense for the past
couple of years. Our former wide receivers coach (Sam Baldwin)
implemented it. It originally had just one pitch. Earlier this
week in practice, our quarterbacks coach Riley Jensen said that when he
was coaching at NC State they had the same thing, but leaked the
tailback for the second lateral," coach Aaron Whitehead told MaxPreps in
an email. "We had only practiced it a couple of times with the
additional pitch. When I called it, we were hoping to get in field goal
range, but Coleman Meier stepped it up a level and
scored."
Well done, Olympus. Well done.
