As Texas football rivalries go, Port Neches-Groves vs Nederland is unique with its tie to a coaching icon.

The game is nicknamed the Bum Phillips Bowl because the former head coach of the Houston Oilers coached at both high schools earlier in his career. He was at Nederland from 1951-56 and Port Neches-Groves from 1963-64.

Bum Phillips' son,Wade Phillips, who has enjoyed success in his own coaching career, played quarterback for his dad at Port Neches-Groves and led his team to a come-from-behind 22-21 victory over Nederland. When Bum Phillips died at age 90 in 2013, it happened to coincide with that season's game between Port-Neches-Groves and Nederland. Through further investigation, it was learned at the moment of his death the game between his two favorite schools was tied 7-7.

The series dates to 1925 and Port Neches-Groves leads 50-38-7.

The schools, 4.3 miles apart, are tucked away in the southeast corner of the state. The passionate fan bases grew because of the high level of play over the years. The Bulldogs and Indians have appeared in a combined nine state title games. Port Neches-Groves went to win three titles. Nederland has one.

Port Neches-Groves (Port Neches) at Nederland

Port Neches-Groves: QB Blake Bost (6-2, 180), WR Kaleb Wuenschel (6-0, 180), LB Santiago Agudelo (5-11, 210), OL Jaylen Garth (6-5, 290), DL Joshua Patteson (6-2, 230).

Nederland: QB Bryce McMorris (5-10, 155), CB Logan Nguyen (5-7, 145), CB Cedric Pete 5-8, 160), RB Elijah Flowers (5-8, 160), RB Kade Scott (6-0, 175).

In addition to the Bum Phillips trophy that goes to the winning team each year, a playoff berth is also on the line this time. Both teams are part of a three-way tie for second place in District 12-5A-2 with 4-2 records. Port Neches-Groves is 6-3 for the season and Nederland is 4-5. Port Neches-Groves won last year 34-21 but Nederland has won 11 in the last 15 seasons.

Atascocita: QB Brice Matthews (5-11, 176), RB Quincy Thompson (5-10, 195), DE Asyrus Simon (6-4, 247), OL Will Jones (6-3, 280), WR Dylan Robinson (6-3, 196).

Humble: QB Dexter Wyble (5-11, 180), RB Zaveri Harris (5-9, 160), RB X'zavier Sidney (5-7, 190), WR/CB Dontee' McCray (5-11, 178), LB Aarun Lockett (6-0, 215).

Since losing 56-14 to Katy in Week 2 , Atascocita (8-1) has gone on a 7-0 run through District 22-6A competition and leads Humble (8-1, 6-1) and Dobie (Houston) by one game. A Humble victory would create at least a two-way tie for the district title. Atascocita crushed Humble a year ago 65-21 in the first meeting of the schools in nine years, but Humble enjoys a 3-2 series edge.

Judson: QB Mike Chandler II (6-1, 183), RB De'Anthony Lewis (6-0, 195), WR Amarea Bailey (6-2, 172), LB Treylin Payne (6-1, 210), CB Keron Napoleon (5-10, 165).

Clemens: QB Max Didomenico (5-11, 195), LB Derrick Lewis (6-1, 215), RB Amari Williams (5-7, 170), WR Andrew Edwards (5-11, 180), LB Jackson Macias (6-0, 200).

Clemens, coming off a 6-5 season a year ago and picked to finish in the middle of the pack in District 26-6A, finds itself one win away from an outright district title. But the team Clemens (8-1, 6-0) has to beat is perennial power Judson (9-0, 6-0). Against Clemens, Judson is 6-0 including a 49-7 thrashing last year.

DeSoto: QB Samari Collier (6-3, 210), CB Jaheem Muhammad (5-10, 170), DT Byron Murphy II (6-2, 256), LB D'verryon Foster (5-11, 190), WR Lawrence Arnold (6-4, 175).

Cedar Hill: QB Kaidon Salter (6-2, 185), RB Corie Allen (5-11, 185), SB Quinshone Bright (5-9, 170), FS Isaiah Hall (6-1, 185), WR Cameron Hutchings (6-1, 170).

This rivalry has grown as football fortunes at both schools skyrocketed over the last two decades. The campuses are separated by six miles. DeSoto comes in with the better season record (8-1, 5-1 in District 7-6A) but Cedar Hill (7-2, 6-0) has a seven-game winning streak and leads the district race. DeSoto has a narrow 8-6 series lead over the last 14 seasons but Cedar Hill has won three state titles to one for DeSoto in that stretch.
