The next stop on the eighth-annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard was
Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.).
The mood for the presentation, which took place during a pep rally, was set by the school band, which welcomed all the students into the gym. The Patriots had a memorable season when they claimed their third Georgia AAAA state title in the past four years by decisively bearing Ridgeland of Rossville, 45-10. To top off its perfect 15-0 season, the Sandy Creek football team was ranked No. 88 in the country out of more than 16,000 football programs according to the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings.
With the students, faculty and family present, everyone was ready to see the Patriots receive the prestigious Minuteman Trophy. Sgt. First Class Richard Tyner of the Georgia Army National Guard presented head coach Chip Walker and his team with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. In his acceptance speech, coach Walker talked about what it means to be a Patriot on the football field and more importantly receiving the honor from true Patriots: The Army National Guard. The packed gym erupted in cheers and applause as coach Walker and the players soaked in the recognition.
The Sandy Creek football players were not the only ones being recognized that afternoon. The girls volleyball team was honored by the City of Tyrone for its successful season as well! After the pep rally, excited teammates, donning their Tour of Champions commemorative T-shirts, congratulated one another and took turns taking pictures with the prestigious trophy.
We hope to see Sandy Creek High School again on next year's Tour of Champions!
