Elena Delle Donne of Ursuline Academy missed 10 games earlier this season due to mononucleosis and only needed only 13 games to convince McDonald’s that she was worthy of the coveted Morgan Wootten Player of the Year award.
Gatorade also saw fit to name Delle Donne the state player of the year, with Erique Gumbs of Caravel earning the honor on the boys’ side.
Both athletes were honored by Gatorade for their contributions on and off the court.
Delle Donne is a member of the National Honors Society and volunteer for special needs children, while Gumbs is active in his church as a youth counselor. Of course, it didn’t hurt that both Gumbs and Delle Donne guided their teams to state championships.
Before Delle Donne begins her college career at Connecticut, she will participate in the McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Games at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee Wis., tonight. The girls’ game will begin at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
Soccer: Caravel’s Oduaran Headed to Maryland
Matt Oduaran of Caravel has opted to play soccer for the University of Maryland after he graduates this spring. The Cavaliers star midfielder was named NSCAA Regional All-American and first team All-State as a junior and senior.
"Matt is an athletic and skillful young man who will also compete in the wide midfield and forward positions,” Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “He has a lot of potential and I am confident he will realize that potential because of his great appetite to learn."
Before joining with the Terrapins, Oduaran will play for the D.C. United youth team in Spain this May.
Baseball: Caravel and Hodgson Make Statements
Caravel rolled past two Maryland schools at the Arundel Baseball Tournament Saturday.
The combined score in the two games was 32-2 in Caravel’s favor. The Cavaliers knocked off Leonardtown 10-0 in five innings and Arundel 12-2 in six innings to win the tournament decisively.
Not to be outdone, Hodgson beat Mount Pleasant 14-2 in a Blue Hen Flight B game.
Pitcher Dain Thorpe had nine strikeouts and allowed one hit. Dan Eby added six RBI’s.
