The Helix Highlanders, ranked No. 6 in the San Diego Union-Tribune poll, defeated the No. 10 Brawley Wildcats, 17-14, in a non-league game at Brawley Friday, Sept. 29.

Turnovers staked Brawley to an early 14-0 lead.

"I told the players we hadn't punted yet and that we couldn't keep making turnovers," Highlander coach Donnie Van Hook said.

The Highlanders settled for a 28-yard field goal from Kenny Ewert to draw to 14-10.

Brett Marquis led all rushers with 119 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries as the No. 5 La Costa Canyon Mavericks defeated the host Mira Mesa Marauders, 28-7. La Costa Canyon's Rusty Leedy added 88 yards on 13 carries for the Mavericks. Mira Mesa's Kevin O'Mary completed 7 of 17 passes for 126 yards with an interception, while Jelani Burton added 84 yards on 15 carries for the Marauders.ÿ

Donnie McKillop contributed a game-high 270 yards with two touchdowns on 14 of 24 passing, as the No.7 Poway Titans cruised to a 24-6 road win over the Fallbrook Warriors. Poway's Ryan Deehan finished with four catches for 134 yards and a touchdown for the Titans. Fallbrook's Cody McDole carried the ball 10 times for 98 yards for the Warriors.

In Valley League action, Noel Phillips rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries as the host Escondido Cougars rolled over the San Marcos Golden Knights, 57-0.

Nate Org finished 9 of 15 for 71 yards and one touchdown as the San Pasqual Golden Eagles defeated the host Ramona Bulldogs, 24-21, in the Valley League opener for both schools. Bryan Fiorito led San Pasqual with 182 yards rushing and one touchdown on 21 carries, while Kyle Albini rushed for 83 yards on 12 carries for the Golden Eagles.ÿ Ramona's Ameen El-Ashqar had 144 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 11 attempts, while Kyle Blackwell added 114 yards rushing and a touchdown on 25 carries for the Bulldogs.

Dante Potter recorded 117 yards rushing and a touchdown on 20 carries as the Mission Hills Grizzlies defeated the visiting Valley Center Jaguars, 21-7, in the Valley League opener for both schools.ÿ Mission Hills quarterback Caleb Charlow was 13-for-20 passing for 148 yards with one interception, while Blake Ballardo had five receptions for 60 yards for the Grizzlies.
