No. 3 St. John Bosco gives up 773 yards, wins by 21 over Centennial

A combination track meet and fastbreak-filled basketball game broke out at Cerritos College Saturday night.

It was disguised as a CIF state Southern Region Open Division bowl game.

In the end, sophomore tailback Sean McGrew broke loose for 367 yards rushing on 17 carries while scoring seven touchdowns as St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), the nation's No. 3 team, motored to a 70-49 win over No. 23 Centennial (Corona).

The victory vaults Bosco (15-0) into the Open Bowl title game against four-time defending champion and No. 5 De La Salle (14-0) in the ultimate matchup for California super powers with massive lines.

Centennial, which piled up a remarkable 773 yards in defeat, got 442 yards passing and five touchdowns from Robert Webber four TD catches from Barry Ware and 264 yards rushing and two scores by Tre Watson.

Watson finished with 417 carries for 3,762 yards and 50 touchdowns, all school records (he tied the 2004 TD record of Brandon Minor).

And the Huskies lost by three touchdowns.

Bosco broke open a 21-21 halftime time with four unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to pull away.

Josh Rosen threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns, including a 31-yarder to Jaleel Wadood which started the second-half onslaught, which also featured an 81-yard TD run by McGrew and a 76-yard screen pass for touchdown to — you guessed it — McGrew.

McGrew, a 5-foot-7, 174-pounder, came into the game with nice numbers for a sophomore, averaging 111.1 yards rushing per game with 1,556 and 15 touchdowns. His season highs coming in were 167 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

He averages a little more than 11 carries per game.

Centennial coach Matt Logan knew the Huskies were in for a tussle before the game started.

He called Bosco perhaps the most talented team he's ever faced, noting it had upwards of 15 Division I recruits.

"They have no weakness," Logan said of Bosco. "They're so dang talented. They're loaded. And they do a good job coaching them up. It's a huge task to say the least."

It was for both teams.

Bosco now takes on De La Salle which rolled to a 45-17 win over No. 16 Folsom. The Spartans have rolled four Southern California foes by pretty decisive scores — Crenshaw (28-14), Servite (48-8), Westlake (35-0) and Centennial (48-28). This one figures to be a tussle to the end.
