Colorado high school football rankings: Cherry Creek crowned 2020 MaxPreps Champion, finishes No. 1

Bruins shut out Valor Christian in Class 5A state championship game to cap unbeaten season.

The high school football season in Colorado came to a close over the weekend with champions crowned in seven classifications. Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village) was among the winners, taking home the Class 5A trophy with a 21-0 win over Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch) and finishing No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 computer rankings.

That victory, coupled with its 9-0 record and tremendous play this season, makes Cherry Creek the 2020 MaxPreps Champion for the state of Colorado.

The Bruins built on their championship legacy, bringing the total to 11 state titles in 19 appearances. Under legendary head coach Dave Logan, the program has won back-to-back 5A crowns and 23 consecutive games overall.

Against Valor Christian, the Cherry Creek defense was the story as it has been all season. The Bruin D recorded its fourth shutout of the season and allowed a grand total of 41 points in nine outings. Seniors Luis Lozano, Malik Majekodunmi and Arden Walker were among the leaders on that side of the ball.

The offense averaged nearly 40 points per game behind quarterback Julian Hammond, 1,000-yard rusher James Walker II and wide receiver Chase Penry.

Logan won his ninth state championship and third at Cherry Creek. He previously helped Arvada West, Chatfield and Mullen win titles.

About the MaxPreps computer rankings

Our computer rankings utilize the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly-ranked opponents) and strength of schedule. For example, a team's ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below it than a team ranked ahead. Playoff wins are weighted higher than regular season games.
