The big question as the final chapter of the 2010 prep football season in Alabama comes to a close is who will be named Mr. Football by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. The ASWA has annually named the state's top prep player since 1983. Last weekend, the ASWA released its annual Super 12 Team – considered the best of the best among the 2010 ASWA All-State Team selections.
The ASWA, comprised of more than 30 prep sports writers across the state, picks offensive and defensive all-state selections for all six AHSAA classifications and for the Alabama Independent School Association as well.
The Mr. Football announcement will come at the 29th annual annual ASWA's Mr. Football Award Player of the Year luncheon on Jan. 12, which will be hosted by The Birmingham News and sponsored by Hibbetts. The ASWA invites the Back and Lineman of the Year in each of the classifications along with members of their families and their coaching staffs.
It is a safe bet the winner will come from the Super 12 list – which includes 11 seniors and one junior this season. The list, as usual, is top heavy with offensive skill players, as nine of the 12 played on the offensive side of the ball.
The list includes: quarterbacks
Kyle Caldwell of Dadeville,
Jamal Golden of Wetumpka and
Jameis Winston of Hueytown. Running backs are
Brent Calloway of Russellville,
Kendarius Fritts of Linden and Mark Lear of Clarke Prep (AISA). Receivers are
Sammie Coates of Leroy and
Danny Woodson of Mobile-LeFlore.
Auburn commitment
Reese Dismukes of Spanish Fort is the only offensive lineman of the bunch. Rounding out the Super 12 are defensive back
Jonathan Rose of Leeds, linebacker
Vinnie Sunseri of Tuscaloosa-Northridge and defensive lineman
Diaheem Watkins of Centreville-Bibb County. All but Winston, a junior, are seniors. Six have made college commitments: Coates, Dismukes and Rose to Auburn; Calloway, Sunseri and Woodson to Alabama.
The ASWA's Back, Lineman and Coach of the Year selections for each classification include:
