Salt Lake County and Utah County regions are once again producing a significant majority of the top Utah high school football teams during the 2016 season.
64 percent of the state's Top 25 teams in the latest MaxPreps computer rankings hail from the two counties. Ninety percent of the teams ranked in the Top 10 are from high schools either in Salt Lake County or Utah County.
Region 4 is the leader in terms of the quantity of ranked teams. Five of the seven teams in the Class 5A region are currently ranked. Lone Peak (7-1) leads the way as the no. 3 team behind unbeaten teams Bingham (8-0) and East (8-0). Region 7 isn't far behind. The top four teams in this Class 4A region all occupy spots in the Top 25 rankings – led by 4th ranked and undefeated Alta (8-0).
Region 3 boasts the best cumulative winning percentage for Class 5A regions with multiple ranked teams. Bingham, Jordan and West Jordan are a combined 20-3 overall (.870). For Class 4A, Region 5's ranked teams have the best cumulative winning percentage with East and Highland at a combined 14-1 overall (.933).
Class 3AA is the only other classification with teams currently ranked in the Top 25. The top two teams from each Class 3AA region occupy spots in the rankings. Ironically, in both cases the two teams are from the same county. Ranked class 3AA North teams Tooele and Stansbury are both from Tooele County while ranked Class 3AA South teams Dixie and Desert Hills are both from Washington County.
