Video: Tyjon Lindsey (Bishop Gorman, NV) highlights
See what the Bishop Gorman receiver did last season.Three states, three national-caliber programs, three emphatic wins.
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), the defending mythical national champion, is at it again. Even with a new head coach.
The Gaels, who went on the road to knock around perennial national power
Bellevue (Wash.) on Friday by a 35-7 score, are coached by their former defensive coordinator Kenny Sanchez, who is the brother of their former head coach Tony Sanchez.
But frankly, the transition has been remarkably smooth and easy. Almost as methodical as Gorman's win.
Biaggio Walsh, the grandson of Muhammad Ali, opened with two quick first-quarter scores on touchdown runs of 25 and 40 yards. That's all the team's stout defense would need.
Haskell Garrett added a touchdown run before halftime, then after the break the dynamic junior tandem of quarterback
Tate Martell and receiver
Tyjon Lindsey connected on a 50-yard bomb to make it 28-0 in the third.
Jonathan Shumaker added the finishing touches with touchdown run in the fourth.
All of it came against the 11-time Washington state champions, known for beating out-of-state powers. Bellevue, which played without suspended coach Butch Goncharoff (recruiting violations), had piled up an 8-2 record against non-Washington teams the past 11 years. And they weren't cupcake opponents. They faced teams like Trinity (Euless, Texas), Serra (Gardena, Calif.) and Alta (Utah).
The Wolverines have now lost two straight after dropping last year's state title game to Eastside Catholic, which ended their 67-game win streak.
Gorman opened the season with a 35-14 win over nationally ranked Chandler (Ariz.) at home before going on the road to defeat Bingham (South Jordan, Utah), 38-20. It doesn't get any easier for the Gaels, who play two straight home games against Southern California mainstays Long Beach Poly and Servite (Anaheim) before an Oct. 23 home game with New Jersey and national power Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey).
"If all goes well, we'll go 15 straight weeks without a break or without a loss," Sanchez said on Wednesday. "There's a long way to go. It's gonna be a grind, but these guys are used to it."
That's exactly what they did last year.
The Gaels, who have won six straight state titles, have now won 27 straight games. They are 88-5 since 2009.
