Lake Oswego (Lake Oswego, Ore.) vs. Sheldon (Eugene, Ore.)
A pair of unbeaten teams will battle for the Class 6A state championship Saturday at Portland's Jeld-Wen Field. Lake Oswego (13-0) is No. 1 in the state, according to MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, and Sheldon (13-0) is No. 2. This is a rematch of a 2010 state quarterfinal game won by Lake Oswego in surprisingly easy fashion, 45-14. (The Lakers then lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Aloha (Beaverton).) In the last 11 seasons, Lake Oswego has reached the semifinals seven times and the state final three times but has yet to bring home a state title. On other hand, Sheldon is shooting for its fourth championship in 10 seasons.
In last week's semifinals, both teams were held to their season's lowest scoring outputs and won a game by fewer than 10 points for the first time all year. Senior quarterback
Alex Matthews accounted for all of Lake Oswego's scoring with three touchdown passes in a 21-13 win over Jesuit (Portland). In the other semifinal, Sheldon's defense scored a touchdown while not allowing Central Catholic (Portland) into the end zone in an 18-9 win.
