Game PreviewMater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) will try and do something Friday night that no one has done in 1,427 days — beat
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas). The Gaels have reeled off 55 straight wins, the second longest active winning streak in the country.
Gorman has dominated against the state of California as of late with 12 straight wins and a 15-2 mark since 2004.
Two of the best quarterbacks in the country will have a say in how this one unfolds. Mater Dei's
J.T. Daniels is the No. 1 rated pro-style quarterback from the Class of 2019 and Bishop Gorman's
Dorian Thompson-Robinson is the No. 4 dual-threat QB from the Class of 2018.
Too add even more fuel to the fire, Daniels is a USC commit and Thompson-Robinson is a UCLA commit. Daniels was the 2016 MaxPreps Sophomore of the Year after throwing for nearly 5,000 yards and 67 touchdowns. The future Trojan has already thrown for more yards and touchdowns than any other quarterback from the Orange County area, names that include Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley, Mark Sanchez, Sam Darnold and Carson Palmer.
Thompson-Robinson showed why he was such a highly regarded quarterback before even making one start under center. In his first career start, he finished the night with nearly 300 yards passing, five touchdowns and a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3.
Another key position Friday will be at linebacker. Bishop Gorman's 5-star USC commit
Palaie Gaoteote is one of the best in the country. He checks in as the No. 10 recruit in the entire Class of 2018. Not far behind is Mater Dei's 4-star linebacker
Solomon Tuliaupupu. The former Claremont star had 126 tackles and 18 tackles for loss in 2016 and enters this season as the No. 3 inside linebacker in the Class of 2018.
Inexperienced, but talented, secondaries could also be a key. Fortunately, both teams have tremendous lines and linebackers to help negate that pressure. The health of two talented Mater Dei receivers will be worth keeping an eye on. Five-star wideout
Amon-Ra St. Brown is a game-time decision while
C.J. Parks has practiced all week and is expected to play. They both missed the Monarchs' season opener vs. Bishop Amat.
