MaxPreps Student SectionBrooklyn Tech (Brooklyn, N.Y.) spring sports have a lot to live up to if they hope to be as successful as their fall and winter counterparts. With playoff appearances by the varsity football, girls' varsity and jv basketball, bowling, golf, soccer, and volleyball teams, there is a lot to live up to. Additionally, the boys' bowling team made it to the finals where they lost to New Dorp. The swim team made it to the finals but lost to Stuyvesant; however the wrestling team won the PSAL championships against Grand Street Campus.
While the boys' baseball team is currently 2-4, many of the other spring sports at Tech are off to some great starts.
The girls' fencing team has had an exceptional start. Currently 4-0 and a lot is expected from the team. They have been the PSAL champions since 2007. Sara Harvey-Brown (foil), Anna Kornak (épée), and Wynne van der Veen (foil) haven't lost a bout yet. A lot is expected of newcomer Eva Ahmad (épée), who has only lost one of her matches so far. On May 2nd, they will be playing Tottenville who is a huge rival and are second place in the division.
The boys' golf team had a shocking coach change this past season, but they believe it was for the better. Their new coach, Ms. Besler has encouraged camaraderie to have fun, which has made them all better players. This newly found ability lead them to their current 2-0 record. Additionally they had the advantage of not losing any veterans last year, like captains Taylor Roberts and Adam Jones. On May 3rd, they will be playing Goldstein High School, their biggest rival, and the only team Tech lost to last year in the regular season.
The girls' handball team has won their division every year since 2007. They have gone far resulting in two championships, the last in 2009. This year, they will be looking for help from returning players Samantha Feng, Guldana Alizakhova, and Emily Liu. Their biggest match won't be until the playoffs when they might face Fort Hamilton who has beaten them in the playoffs the past two years. As for the boys' team, their 3-0 record will come to be tested on May 3rd against division leaders Grand Street Campus. Alan Yaung, Raymond Ng, and Watson Chen will have to play at their peak in order to continue their early successes.
The boys' tennis team has won their division every year since 2009. In order to continue their success, they will be looking to Jake Sosonkin, Justin Selig, and IIan Korchmar who are collectively 12-1 in their matches, but the team as a whole is 5-0. Meanwhile the girls' team is 7-1 with their only loss to division leader Goldstein HS. The team will have a chance to take back the division title from Goldstein on May 3rd. Allie Jackson Hing, Jessica Mai, and Destiny Xie will have to take on the task of beating Goldstein, the division leader for the past two seasons.
The softball team has been exceptional this spring, undefeated 7-0 in their division. The team attributes their success to their esprit de corps. Catcher
Brielle Cardieri is 16-for-19 at bat, with a grand slam and 19 stolen bases. Pitcher
Olivia Lautin has a record of 5-0. Erasmus Hall HS is first in the division with a 9-1 record; their single loss was from playing Brooklyn Tech, who won 10-0. They will be playing each other again May 4th, and Tech hopes to shut down Erasmus' all-star pitcher Juanita Williams who is 8-1.
Lastly, the boys' volleyball team is also off to an impressive start of 9-0 with the playoffs looming. Their next big game probably will not be until the playoffs, with the division practically locked up. In the playoffs they will certainly be relying on veteran players Alex Fevry with 146 assists and Sang Hun Ryu with 58 kills.
Brooklyn Tech sports have been quite successful in the spring so far, and they will have to put in a lot of hard work in order to continue their successes, and be as triumphant as Tech's fall and winter teams.
