The Roswell girls basketball team has played the strongest schedule in New Mexico thus far this year, according to the MaxPreps Computer Rankings. The Coyotes are No. 8 with an 8-3 record, but have the highest schedule rating of 12.8
Roswell's biggest claim to fame was a heart-breaking 49-48 overtime loss to unbeaten, top-ranked Carlsbad. Coyotes star
Jaedyn De La Cerda poured in 32 points in a shootout, with Carlsbad's 5-8 sophomore star,
Carsyn Boswell, who bagged 31 points. De La Cerda, a 5-6 senior guard who signed with the University of New Mexico, led Roswell to the Class 5A state title last year, exploding for 34 points in the finale.
The No. 2 schedule rating is 12.0 by both La Cueva and Cleveland. La Cueva, ranked No. 19, has lost twice to No. 4-ranked Hope Christian, which is 7-1. Cleveland, with a 4-6 record, is ranked No. 42 in the state, having lost twice to La Cueva and once to Carlsbad.
Hope Christian (7-1) has lost only to No. 5 Robertson (also 7-1) 52-50. Hope Christian, which had won 18 straight games dating back to last season, has won the last two Class 4A state titles.
Winless in seven outings, No. 110 Albuquerque has played the 10th strongest schedule with an 8.9 rating. It has lost to No. 11 Eldorado, No. 12 St. Pius and No. 23 Moriarty. Those three teams have a combined record of 24-2.
No. 1 Carlsbad just missed the top 10, placing 11th with an 8.8 schedule rating.
An interesting footnote: Hope Christian and Robertson both are No. 4 and 5, respectively, in state team rating won-lost records and strength of schedule.
