Millions of baseball players dream of being drafted into the MLB. For
Holy Trinity (Hicksville, N.Y.) alum Keith Couch that became a reality. The 20 year old right handed pitcher was drafted 413th by the Boston Red Sox in the 13th round of the 2010 MLB draft.
Couch was a two year starting pitcher at the Holy Trinity and was name team MVP his senior year. He was named All-county and All-Island with the Titans and invited to the Long Island All-star game. Couch saw Titans baseball as an excellent building block towards his Major League dream.
“ Trinity was a good stepping stone to getting to Adelphi where I matured a lot and showed scouts what I can do and that I’m worthy of playing professional ball,” Couch said.
Couch took his talents to Adelphi University for 3 years. Couch his best season for the Tigers as a sophomore. He started 13 games posting a 1.31 ERA and holding opposing batters to a .205 batting average. He also went the distance six times. He was named first team ABCA All-East Region, Second team NCBWA All-East Region and First Team All-ECC.
Couch avoided the sophomore slump and posted a strong junior campaign. During his 10 starts he posted a 5-2 record, an ERA of 2.24 and two saves. He was named first team All-Northeast -10, second-team Daktronics All-East Region, and second team NCBWA All-East Region.
After an impressive journey, Couch was ecstatic to hear his name called.
“Getting drafted by the Red Sox is awesome because they have given me the shot to play professional baseball something I have dreamed about my whole life,” Couch said.
Couch will play this year for the Lowell Spinners in the New York Penn League. Couch knows he has a lot to learn at the next level and is eager to get the MLB as soon as possible.
“In the Red Sox’s system I’m looking to learn as much as I can and move up the system as much as possible and as fast as I can.”
