The high school football season in West Virginia came to a close last weekend. Martinsburg was among the victors, beating Huntington 62-21 to claim its ninth Class 3A state championship since 2010. The 43-point win helped propel the Bulldogs to the No. 1 ranking in the final MaxPreps West Virginia Top 25.
Martinsburg was led by MaxPreps West Virginia Football Player of the Year
Hudson Clement, who reeled in 87 catches for 1,709 yards and 23 touchdowns. The senior also ran the ball 18 times for 175 yards and five more scores. Clement returned punts and kickoffs, adding another touchdown in the return game.
The Bulldogs did score 679 points on the year to average 48.5 points per outing. David Walker's club scored 45 points or more eight times. On defense, Martinsburg gave up 207 points and 14.8 points per contest. The Bulldogs limited their foes to 16 points or less eight times and posted a pair of shutouts.
Runner-up to Martinsburg, Huntington finishes No. 2 in the final ranking while Cabell Midland takes over the No. 3 slot. Bridgeport and Spring Valley round out the Top 5 at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively. Class 2A power Fairmont Senior won its second state football title since 2018 to grab the No. 9 spot while Ritchie County grabs the No. 15 rung after claiming the Class 1A state title with a 42-21 win over Williamstown.
