Video: Highlights of 2018 Sierra Canyon
Watch high-flying show of Cassius Stanley and the sons of four NBA players.
On star power alone, the boys basketball team at
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) may have surpassed them all, even the Chino Hills squads featuring the Ball brothers.
At least the stars in the stands.
Rooting on the Trailblazers every night are former NBA players Scottie Pippen, Kenyon Martin, Tellis Frank and Duane Washington, all whom have sons on the squad.
Their sons —
Scotty Pippen,
K.J. Martin,
Terren Frank and
Duane Washington Jr. — are all college prospects:
• Washington, a 6-foot-4 senior guard who is the nephew of former Lakers' standout Derek Fisher, has signed with Ohio State.
• Martin, a 6-6 junior forward, has offers from Georgetown and Cincinnati.
• Frank, a 6-7 sophomore, has no offers yet but averaged nearly a double-double his first 11 games.
• Pippen, a 6-1 junior guard, was averaging a 13.4 points along with 5.4 assists in his first 11 games.
On top of this quartet is one of the nation's most coveted and viral athletes, high-flying
Cassius Stanley, a 6-5 shooting guard rated the No. 2 junior shooting guard in the country by
247Sports.
Besides the former NBA players, other celebrities, including Kanye West and Drake, have been known to show up to watch the Trailblazers.
But Sierra Canyon kids aren't particularly star struck. According to this
Los Angeles Times story, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, as well as the children of Sean "Puffy" Combs and Dr. Dre all attended Sierra Canyon.
On the court, the Trailblazers (23-3) are equal style and substance. They've been especially strong since Stanley became eligible to play on Jan. 1 after he transferred from Harvard-Westlake.
On Saturday, the Trailblazers cemented their stance as more than just a team pleasing to the eye with a thrilling and gritty 77-74 double-overtime Southern Section Open Division semifinal win over previously unbeaten and national No. 5 Bishop Montgomery (Torrance). It ended a 41-game win streak by the defending state Open Division champion.
See story.
Sierra Canyon almost ended the Knights' streak on Jan. 5, losing 65-62. It was Stanley's second game back. Since then, the Trailblazers have won 13-of-14 and Monday they entered
the MaxPreps Top 25 at No. 19.
The Trailblazers will go for their first Open Division crown Friday versus Mater Dei (Santa Ana).
