If you love high-powered offensive shootouts, then Dallas, Pa. was the place to be.
Both
Dallas and
Williamsport racked up more than 450 yards of total offense. Defense didn't seem to exist.
Adam Goeringer and Jordan Richardson each ran for three touchdowns and the Mountaineers gained nearly 550 yards as Dallas won 52-43 last Saturday in Luzerne County.
It also marked the return of Dallas head coach Ted Jackson, who had to serve a PIAA-imposed suspension.
"They have four or five kids that can run and they're impressive. They picked us apart," Jackson told the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. "Our pass rush was poor and that was a tribute to them and their line. Their offensive schemes were great and we had no answer for some of the things they did. Thank God we kept on scoring."
Williamsport's problem was too much of an early-game hole, trailing 25-6 midway through the second quarter.
"I don't want to even look at the statistics. We couldn't stop them and their quarterback did an awesome job," Williamsport coach Tom Gravish told the newspaper. "We always try and pick a couple positives out of every loss before we walk off the field and the fact we could score 43 points is something to build on."
Millionaire quarterback
Marquise Keiser had a standout day, throwing for 266 yards and four scores – two to
Devon Fisher and one each to
Jared Fagnano and
Ryan Hostrander.
"I was just trying to help the team and make big plays. Whatever I can do to help the team is what I want to do," Fisher told the Williamsport newspaper. "I have a lot of confidence. I've been working a lot with great corners like Sam Person and Shakoor Henderson and that has helped me."
Goeringer, Dallas' quarterback, threw for 108 yards and ran for 125.
2. Abington gets convincing victory: It was supposed to be a test for state-ranked
Abington Heights (Clarks Summit). Instead, it was another lopsided victory for the Comets. The Triple-A squad rushed for almost 350 yards, scoring on its first two possessions and cruised to a 39-10 victory over Delaware Valley.
James Fruehan had 210 yards and three touchdowns, while the Comets seemed touchable on the ground. "It was huge to come out and set the tone on the first drive,"
Mike Beamish told the Scranton Times-Tribune. "The ball just kept rolling from there."
3. Dragons gobble up Tigers: Southern Columbia Area (Catawissa) had just tied the game at 21, thanks to a
Tyrell Thomas 62-yard run. It didn't last long.
Lewisburg's Merle Moscarello upped Thomas, going 72 yards on the next play from scrimmage, breaking the tie as the Green Dragons won the battle of state-ranked teams, 28-21. "The line kept pushing and I kept my feet moving," Moscarello told the Willliamsport Sun-Gazette. "Southern kept me down most of the game, but I kept pushing and so did the line. It was a great team win. We're a family around here, and this was a great team win."
4. Tyrone avoids major upset: State-ranked
Tyrone survived a massive scare from
Central (Martinsburg) last week.
Steve Franco found
Christian Getz open in the end zone on a fourth-down pass with 38 ticks left, and
Jared Templeton booted the extra point through to give the Golden Eagles a 21-20 victory. Central, thanks to a touchdown by
Lucas Runk and
Jarron Knisely, build a 14-0 lead. "There was no pressure," Templeton told the Altoona Mirror. "I've kicked hundreds of extra points. All I had to do was keep my head down and kick through it." Runk accounted for three all touchdowns – two passing and one rushing. He had 94 yards in the air, and 59 on the ground.
5. Honesdale breaks into win column: Finally, a 20-plus game losing streak is over for
Honesdale. The Hornets snapped a 21-game losing skid, according to the Scranton Times-Tribune, with a 21-8 victory over Montrose.
Jesus Rivero had 128 yards and two scores, while
Maleik Torres took back an interception 100 yards. Ethan Jones, who had 180 yards rushing, scored the Meteors' lone touchdown.
