A lopsided recent series history between a pair of Virginia high school football teams continued in unfortunate fashion Friday night as
Freedom (Woodbridge) blasted
Charles J. Colgan (Manassas) 112-16. The victorious Eagles led 91-0 at halftime.
Winning in dominating fashion is nothing new for Freedom (7-0), which is ranked No. 3 in the state of Virginia this week by the MaxPreps computer. The Eagles opened the season with a 62-3 win over Brooke Point and have posted scores of 74-0, 61-0 and 74-0 in subsequent weeks.
Since 2017, lopsided scores have been the norm when Freedom has met Cardinal District foe Colgan. Freedom beat Colgan 64-34 in 2017, 50-7 in 2018, 84-0 in 2019, 55-0 in 2020 and 84-20 last year.
Colgan (2-4) has struggled in recent seasons but began the 2022 campaign with two wins and has remained competitive in its three previous losses.
So how does this happen? Dave Fawcett of
InsideNova.com detailed the blowout – it's worth a read, check it out. Of note is the fact that first-year Colgan head coach Reggie Scott was an assistant at Freedom two years ago.
Freedom went for two five times following touchdowns in the first half.
Scott acknowledged his team's need to stop opponents but admitted to InsideNova.com: "if it was me, it’s not something I would do to someone I know. It is what it is."
Video review of the game indicates Freedom ran the play clock to zero throughout the second half and stuck with a vanilla offense. But four defensive touchdowns and two more on special teams aided in the score spiraling out of control.
