Video: The Season - Behind the scenes preparing for Orange LutheranA staple of the
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) football program has never been size. Not good size. Not as in "whoa, we're going to get squashed by those big monsters" type of size.
Instead, "De La Stomp" has squashed foes with quickness, finesse and compact strength.
In Taylor Lambert's fourth installment in a season-long mini documentary on the 2015 Spartans, he centers on three of De La Salle's "Shrimp squad":
Keanu Andrade,
Logan Nonies and
Isaia Taotua.
Andrade is 5-foot-7 and weighs 195 pounds, Nonies is 5-6 and 185 and Taotua is 5-7 and 215. All are key defensive players for the Spartans. Andrade is the team's leading tackler with 36.
"We play a lot of huge teams, but coach (Justin) Alumbaugh emphasizes that if we have our technique down, we'll be prepared for anyone," Nonies said.
The Season Part IV also gives an inside look at Alumbaugh as a scout-team quarterback, the word "contemplating," and the program's long-time tradition of Thursday night dinners served by former players and alumni. On this night, the sophomores are asked to make special desserts for their coaches.
"It's neat to see all the changes over the years," alum John Vanderklught said. "But it's nice to see some things don't change."
Winning hasn't changed. The Spartans, who have lost just 27 games since 1979, were preparing for a rough-and-tumble game Saturday with Southern California mainstay Orange Lutheran, a former state champion.
Instead, De La Salle won handily 41-3.
