Friday Night Lights shine again in the Lone Star State next week as teams from Class 1A through Class 4A kick off their seasons Aug. 27. The state's two highest classifications, Class 5A and Class 6A have a delayed start to the season with the first week of games kicking off Sept. 24.
Duncanville begins the season atop the state rankings, looking to build on consecutive state runner-up finishes. The Panthers enter as favorites to capture their first state championship since 1998.
After winning the Class 6A Division I state championship in back-to-back seasons, North Shore (Houston) starts the season as the state's second-ranked team with aspirations of winning a third consecutive state title in the highest classification.
Guyer (Denton) and Ryan (Denton) begin the season ranked Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, both looking to avenge state championship game defeats from last season. Guyer looks to capture its first state title since 2013, while Ryan is in search of its first state title since 2002.
