Making just its second playoff appearance in school history, Woodstock notched its first postseason victory by defeating the top-seeded Walton Raiders 28-7.
The Wolverines improved to 7-4 while Walton fell to 9-2 and suffered its first home loss since September of 2006. One major factor was the absence of future Tennessee Volunteer tailback Michael Boydston, who was limited to eight yards on five carries with a banged up ankle.
Leading to charge for the victorious Wolverines was quarterback Taylor Trotter who went 12 of 20 passing for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 13 times for 54 yards and another score that sealed the game.
"We knew Boydston was a little dinged up coming into the game, but we practiced as though he was going to play" Woodstock coach Mike O'Brien told the Marietta Daily Journal. "Not having him seemed to limit what Walton was able to do and, when we got the lead early and kept scoring, I think that made them do some things that they normally don't do as much."
Woodstock will face Norcross, who defeated Parkview 20-17, in the round of 16.
AAAAA: Lassiter 23, Etowah 20
First-year head coach Chip Lindsey not only led his Lassiter Trojans squad back to the playoffs, he helped them earn a 23-20 win over the Region 5-AAAAA champion Etowah Eagles in overtime.
The Trojans improved to 9-2 after their first playoff win in school history while the Eagles fell to 9-2. Nobody was happier than Lindsey.
"It's huge," Lindsey told the Marietta Daily Journal. "I'm just so excited and just proud for all of our guys. They fought their guts out (Friday). We've got great kids and I don't even know what to say."
A gutsy performance by quarterback Hutson Mason, who played through a separated left (non-throwing) shoulder, helped the Trojans overcome deficits of 14-0 and 17-14. The Trojans now move on to face North Gwinnett who thumped Brookwood 34-10 in the first round.
AAAAA: Lowndes 41, Luella 13
Lowndes began the quest for its fourth state title in five years with a 41-13 win over Luella.
Leading the charge for the top seed was Greg Reid , who totaled 72 yards rushing and 24 receiving for the Vikings (11-0), who won their 25th straight game. Gerald Demps had five carries for 70 yards as Lowndes outgained Luella 433-110.
Lowndes will move on to face the Bradwell Institute – a 19-6 winner against East Coweta – in the second round.
AAAAA: Grayson 31, Collins Hill 7
Ean Pemberton ran 28 times for 138 yards to lead Grayson to a 31-7 win over Collins Hill.
The Ram running game totaled 331 of the team's 395 total yards.
"Good teams make good plays," head coach Mickey Conn told the Gwinnett Daily Post. "We played a very physical football game, and a good football team. ... But we got momentum and ran with it."
Grayson (11-0) will face East Paulding (9-2) in round two of the playoffs.
