buzzer in the Division IV state semifinals against Ottoville.The 42nd annual
Ohio High School Athletic Association girls basketball state tournament wrapped this past weekend at the Jerome Schottenstein Center
on the campus of The Ohio State University. State championships were awarded in four divisions.
Here is what you need to know about what happened...
* Knight Time
Led by a
senior class that set a state record with 116 wins (against five losses),
Archbishop Alter (Kettering) won its
third straight Division II state title with a 58-41 win over
Hathaway Brown (Shaker Heights). It was the Knights' fourth straight state final appearance. Seniors
Braxtin Miller (Oklahaoma State) and
Libby Bazelak (Duquesne) combined for 44 points, 16 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals in the state final. The loss denied Hathaway Brown a state-record tying sixth state title.
* Public vs Private
Three of Ohio's four state titles were won by private schools. Surprisingly, D-IV, the state's smallest classification, had four public schools in the Final Four.
* MaxPreps/OGBR Poll vs AP Poll
Of the
16 teams to make the state tournament,
13 were ranked in the final MaxPreps/JJHuddle/OGBR state poll. How many were ranked in the final
AP state polls? 10.

Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati). The Cougars
claimed their sixth D-I state championship and first since 2009 with a 54-44 win over
Notre Dame Academy (Toledo) in the final. Head coach
Dr. Scott Rogers picked up his 200th career win in the semifinals.
* Five of a Kind
With a 61-41 win over defending state champion
Waterford,
Hiland (Berlin) claimed its
fifth D-IV state title and first since 2008. The Hawks are now
tied for second for most state titles (with Hathaway Brown and
St. John's (Delphos) in state history. Hiland, the
MaxPreps and AP poll champion, tied a
state record for made 3-pointers in a D-IV championship game with eight.
Alter, led by Oklahoma State recruit Braxtin Miller, claimed its third straight D-II state title.

Gilmour Academy (Gates Mills) won the
first state title in program history with a pair of wins over traditional powers in D-III.
Africentric Early College (Columbus) and
Versailles entered the state tournament with six titles and nine finals combined, but the Lancers scored 65-54 and 56-54 victories over the Nubians and Tigers, respectively, in the state semi and final. Junior star
Naz Hillmon had 16 points and 16 rebounds in the semis and 24 points and 17 rebounds in the final.

Despite losing in the D-I final, Notre Dame Academy turned in
one of the tournament's most impressive wins with a 75-59 semifinal win over previously unbeaten
Newark. The Wildcats were
ranked No. 1 in the final MaxPreps/OGBR and AP state polls.
* Fantastic Finishes
Both of the
small school semifinal games were decided by last second shots. Defending D-IV state champion Waterford beat
Jackson Center 37-35 at the buzzer when junior Hayley Duff scored a lay-up. Hiland beat
Ottoville 44-41 when junior
Kennedy Schlabach hit a 3-pointer as time expired (watch here).
