The Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif., had the first big surprise of the week-long event as the 3-0 Kansas City Royals knocked off the pitching-deep Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
The win lifts Kansas City into a tie with the Texas Rangers, who also won Sunday, at 3-0.
Here's a look at each of Sunday's games:
Kansas City Royals 12, Milwaukee Brewers 7
The Milwaukee Brewers entered the Area Code Games as the favorite to go undefeated based on their tremendous pitching depth. Apparently that failed to register with the Kansas City Royals.
Kansas City stayed unbeaten at 3-0 with a 12-7 win over the Southern California-based Brewers. Three Royals had a pair of hits, including
Andrew Pullin of Centralia (Wash.), Dylan LaVelle of Lake Stevens (Wash.) and
Trek Stemp of Kennewick (Wash.). Jonny Locher added an RBI double while
Theo Alexander of Lake Washington (Kirkland, Wash.) and Clint Coulter of Union (Camas, Wash.) each had an RBI.
Texas Rangers 7, Oakland Athletics 4
A year ago the Texas Rangers struggled at the Area Code Games, winning just one out of five games. The Lone Star State representatives have done a 180 this year, however, winning their third straight game with a 7-4 victory over the Northern California Oakland Athletics.
Although it trailed the A's twice in the outing, Texas got strong production from one of the Louisiana players on the team, Acadiana's
Stryker Trahan, as he doubled and scored in the second inning and had a triple with a run scored to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning.
Nick Williams, an outfielder from Ball (Galveston), added an RBI single and also scored on a sacrifice fly for the Rangers in the second inning.
New York Yankees 5, Washington Nationals 4
The Yankees built a 5-0 lead through the first six innings and held off a big rally by the Nationals in the sixth to collect the 5-4 win Sunday.
Jose Cuas of Grand Street Campus (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a double among his two hits and also scored a run in leading the Yankee offense.
Karl Keglovits of Nazareth (Pa.) struck out three batters in his stint on the mound while Kenny Koplove of Penn Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.) held off the rally in the sixth by getting the final three outs of the inning.
