MaxPreps Top 25 Midwest high school football rankings

The No. 1 team may have stayed the same in the MaxPreps Top 25 Midwest High School Football Rankings, but some new teams and some new states have entered the fray near the bottom.

We welcome Wisconsin and Nebraska to the mix this week, as Homestead and Millard West are now in the Top 25.

MaxPreps Top 25 Midwest High School Football Rankings
1. (1 last week) St. Xavier (Cincinnati), 1-0
Defeated then-No. 4 Ben Davis (Indianapolis) 34-7 as senior quarterback Nicholas Tensing completed 13 of 19 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Ben Glines scored twice on receptions and once on a run. Next: Friday at No. 4 Colerain (Cincinnati).

2. (2) Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), 1-0
The defending Division I state champions edged then-No. 8 Pike (Indianapolis) 37-33 on a 43-yard pass from senior quarterback Gus Ragland to junior wide receiver Chase Pankey with 11 seconds remaining. Ragland ran 25 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns while completing 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown. Next: Saturday at Covington Catholic (Park Hills, Ky.).

3. (3) Mount Carmel (Chicago), 1-0
The defending Class 8A champions opened their season with a 40-0 rout of St. Patrick (Chicago) at Soldier Field. Senior Christian Searles had two touchdown catches and also returned an interception for a 38-yard touchdown. Next: Friday vs. Morgan Park (Chicago) at Gately Stadium.

4. (7) Colerain (Cincinnati), 1-0
The Cardinals outlasted Park Vista (Lake Worth, Fla.) 45-27 in their season debut. Senior quarterback Kelvin Cook ran 20 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns and threw one scoring pass.  DeTuan Smith ran 26 times for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Next: Friday vs. No. 1 St. Xavier (Cincinnati).

5. (9) Lawrence Central (Indianapolis), 2-0
The defending Class 5A state champions extended their winning streak to 17 games with a 34-31 victory over North Central (Indianapolis) as senior quarterback Tyler Redfern completed 11 of 23 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns and also scored twice on runs. Senior Mark Wilson added 129 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. Next: Friday vs. Trinity (Louisville, Ky.).

6. (10) St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), 1-0
The Eagles overcame four turnovers to defeat Glenville (Cleveland) 40-24. Junior quarterback Brett Kean passed for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while another junior, David Dowell, ran 30 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Next: Saturday vs. Buchtel (Akron, Ohio).

7. (11) Cass Tech (Detroit), 1-0
The Technicians opened their season with an 18-14 victory over Southfield (Mich.). Junior quarterback Jayru Campbell completed 18 of 28 passes for 203 yards and the winning touchdown. Next: Friday at Northwestern (Detroit).

8. (22) Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), 1-0
Legendary coach Al Fracassa opened his final campaign with a 29-20 victory over then No. 6 St. Ignatius (Cleveland) at Wayne State University. Alex Malzone completed 24 of 35 passes for 284 yards and one touchdown. Jason Alessi kicked field goals of 41 and 31 yards and scored on a 70-yard punt return. Next: Friday vs. St. John's (Toledo, Ohio) at Hurley Field.

9. (8) Pike (Indianapolis), 1-1
The Red Devils dropped a tough 37-33 decision to No. 2-ranked Moeller (Cincinnati) despite holding a yardage advantage in the offensive-minded contest. Senior Taylor Sanders ran 16 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while senior quarterback Brent Lyles had several clutch runs. Next: Friday vs. Arsenal Tech (Indianapolis).

10. (17) Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.), 2-0
The Trojans routed Whiteland (Ind.) 56-0 as senior Luke Calvert threw three of his six completions for touchdowns and junior Max Norris scored twice. Senior Dillon Dallas made 10 tackles - six for losses. Next: Friday at No.11 Carmel (Ind.).

11. (5) Carmel (Ind.), 1-1
The Greyhounds lost a tough 42-35 decision to defending Kentucky state champion St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) before a standing-room crowd of more than 9,000. Senior quarterback John Lampe completed 13 of 18 passes for 206 yards and one touchdown, while UCLA-bound wide receiver Austin Roberts scored on a 95-yard kickoff return. Next: Friday vs. No. 10-ranked Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.).

12. (25) Wheaton-Warrenville South (Wheaton, Ill.), 1-0
The Tigers upset then-No. 12-ranked Glenbard West (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) 17-14 in their season opener. Senior quarterback Ryan Graham scored the winning touchdown on a 1-yard keeper with 4;59 remaining. He finished with 10 of 14 passing for 171 yards and ran for 55 yards. Next: Friday at Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.).

13. (4) Ben Davis (Indianapolis), 1-1
The Giants suffered a 34-7 loss on the road against No. 1-ranked St. Xavier (Cincinnati). Junior quarterback Kyle Castner completed 18 of 34 passes for 196 yards and their lone touchdown. Next: Friday at North Central (Indianapolis).

14. (14) Blue Springs (Mo.), 1-0
The defending Class 6 state champions opened their season with a 41-6 victory over Central (St. Joseph, Mo.). Dalvin Warmack led the way by rushing 14 times for 165 yards and three touchdowns and amassing 101 receiving yards. Next: Friday at Park Hill South (Kansas City, Mo.).

15. (15) Eden Prairie (Minn.), 1-0
The two-time defending Class 6A state champions opened their season with a 56-17 victory over Elk River (Minn.) to give coach Mike Grant his 230th career win. Charlie Venable scored three touchdowns as the Eagles rushed for 568 yards. Next: Friday vs. Prior Lake (Minn.).

16. (16) Totino-Grace (Fridley, Minn.), 1-0
The defending Class 5A state champions launched their season with a 23-12 victory over Coon Rapids (Minn.) as junior Kez Flomo ran 15 times for 168 yards and one touchdown. Senior linebacker Josh Sitarz made seven solo tackles. Next: Friday at Edina (Minn.).

17. (6) St. Ignatius (Cleveland), 0-1
The Wildcats' rally fell short as they bowed to then-No. 22 Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) 29-20. Senior strong safety Dameon Willis made six solo and seven assisted tackles. Coach Chuck Kyle announced that starting quarterback Peter Mahoney (broken ankle) and Ohio State-bound linebacker Kyle Berger (torn knee ligament) are out for the year due to preseason injuries. Next: Friday at Mentor (Ohio).

18. (18) Dowling (West Des Moines, Iowa), 1-0
The Maroons opened their campaign with a 37-7 victory over Southeast Polk (Pleasant Hill, Iowa). Junior quarterback Ryan Boyle ran for 194 yards and passed for 99 yards, accounting for two touchdowns on the ground and two in the air. It marked his first game since injuring a knee in September of 2012. Next: Friday vs. Valley (West Des Moines, Iowa).

19. (12) Glenbard West (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), 0-1
The defending Class 7A state champions' 14-game winning streak ended with a 17-14 loss to then-No. 25 Wheaton-Warrenville South (Wheaton, Ill.). Senior quarterback Drew Vogg passed for 104 yards and one touchdown, a 50-yarder to Scott Andrews. Next: Saturday vs. Morton (Cicero, Ill.).

20. (21) Wheaton North (Wheaton, Ill.), 1-0
The Falcons flew past Cary-Grove (Cary, Ill.) 42-18 in their season opener. Quarterback Clayton Thorson threw five scoring passes - three to J.P. Forcucci and two to Matt Biegalski. Next: Friday at Geneva (Ill.).

21. (23) Lincoln-Way East (Frankfort, Ill.), 1-0
The Griffins overcame three lost fumbles and two interceptions while opening their season with a 17-7 victory over Carmel (Mundelein, Ill.). Junior Alex Kraft ran 18 times for 152 yards. Next: Friday vs. Lincoln-Way Central (New Lenox, Ill.).

22. (24) Xavier (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), 1-0
The Saints marched past Hempstead (Dubuque, Iowa) 35-7 in their season opener. Senior quarterback Quinton Scholer passed for 112 yards and ran for 99 yards - accounting for four touchdowns - and played just one series in the second half. Next: Friday vs. Jefferson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

23. (NR) East St. Louis (Ill.) 1-0
Defeated then-No. 20 Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) 19-14 in the season opener for both teams. Senior quarterback Temarcus Jones passed for 155 yards and two touchdowns - including the winning 15-yarder to Greg Taylor with 4:48 remaining. Natereace Strong ran 35 times for 221 yards and one touchdown. Next: Saturday vs. Montini (Lombard, Ill.).

24. (NR) Homestead (Mequon, Wis.), 2-0
Defending Division II state champ nipped defending Division I state champ Arrowhead (Hartland, Wis.) - then ranked No. 19 - 13-7 to snap a 14-game winning streak for the opposition. Junior quarterback Nick Allen scored the winning touchdown on a two-yard run with 1:42 remaining. Next: Friday at Port Washington (Wis.).

25. (NR) Millard West (Omaha, Neb.), 1-0
Veteran quarterback Ross Drwal scored twice on short runs, which were set up by long interception returns by Connor Wieck and Danny Baker. Next: Friday at Millard North (Omaha, Neb.).
