Video: (23) Bishop Amat vs. Mater Dei - high school football preview
MaxPreps previews the big game in Santa Ana.Even when
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) doesn't make it into the Xcellent 25 National High School Football Rankings, it is dangerous on a national level.
No. 23-ranked
Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) found that out Friday, as the Monarchs posted what has to be considered an upset in a 24-21 victory. But it's hard to call it a major upset considering Mater Dei's quality squad.

Amat had a chance to drive and win the game with a late fumble recovery at its own 40 yard line but the Monarchs defense recorded a sack to forge a turnover on downs.
Word coming in was that Mater Dei's offense was going to make changes. Ground-and-pound was going to give way to a more spread attack to take advantage of fast athletes. And while the formations were there, the young man who took care of the scoring for the Monarchs did it in bruising fashion.
Brandon Lamarche ran for three scores for Mater Dei, two coming in the first quarter and the final one, or the game-winner, came in the first three minutes of the final quarter.
Chase Mcgrath also kicked a field goal.
For Bishop Amat,
Torreahno Sweet scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to tie the game up at 14 and then the Lancers took a 21-14 lead later in the quarter when
Chris Gaston returned an interception for a score.
Bishop Amat entered the game No. 1 in the state according to the MaxPreps Computer Rankings and Mater Dei was seventh. While computer adjustments will definitely happen, it remains to be seen if Mater Dei will enter the Xcellent 25 and if Bishop Amat can somehow stay in.
