This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For volleyball, only 10 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 20,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Aztecs ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
On Wednesday, Nov. 9 the No.3 seeded Corona del Sol girls volleyball team routed the Mountain Pointe Pride in three sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-15) for the
2016 AIA 6A state title, which is the first for the Aztecs since 1991. Both teams went into the state championship with much familiarity as it was the sixth meeting between the two this year.
En route to the state final, head coach Ben Maxfield led the team to easy wins over O'Connor (3-0) and Millennium (3-0) before overcoming Xavier College Prep (3-2) which proved to be the Aztecs' most challenging contender in the AIA state playoffs.
At the end of the season, Corona girls volleyball finished ranked
No.1 in 6A,
No.1 in the state,
No.19 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and
No.9 in the nation.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Corona del Sol Aztecs an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the girls volleyball team, coaching staff, students and fans on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. during halftime of the boys basketball game in the gym.
