Video: Valdosta's incredible history of successWildcats have won 24 state and six national championships.
The very exclusive 900-win club is about to get a little more crowded in 2019. A pair of Kentucky high school football teams likely will surpass the milestone with two other Midwest teams also having an outside shot.
The 900-win club currently has a membership of one — Valdosta (Ga.). With 918 wins, Valdosta has won more games than any program in the nation.
However Highlands (Fort Thomas, Ky.) is closing in on the Georgia team with 895 all-time wins. Another Kentucky school, Male (Louisville, Ky.) also should get over 900 wins this year as it went 14-1 last year in winning a state championship and upping its all-time total to 892 wins.
Then there is Mayfield (Ky.) and Washington (Massillon, Ohio). Mayfield, which went 14-1 last year, has 887 wins while Washington, another 14-1 team, has 885 wins.
All five of those schools are part of our list of the Top 50 winningest high school football teams of all-time.
Valdosta's win total changes
MaxPreps lists the source of each team's win total and this year we've switched to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association website as the source for Valdosta's win totals.
There is a difference of six wins between the GHSFHA and the Valdosta High School website. However the GHSFHA meticulously documents each season and the six wins are clearly marked as either forfeits or exhibition games against junior colleges.
California teams are tied
Depending on which source you use, the two winningest teams in California — Bakersfield and Long Beach Poly — are tied for the all-time lead in the state. Or maybe not.
According to the National Federation of High Schools Record Book, Bakersfield has 793 wins. Other sources, including Football Friday Night (FFN) and Cal-Hi Sports, have Bakersfield with only 789. Meanwhile, the NFHS record book doesn't list Long Beach Poly, but FFN has Poly with 793 wins. Cal-Hi Sports has Poly with 771 wins.
Haynesville's total changes
The Louisiana small school powerhouse of Haynesville has seen a jump of nearly 30 wins on its all-time total. That's due to the diligent work of school historian Hunter Bower, who forwarded the school's all-time win total to MaxPreps.
New No. 1 in Arkansas
Central (Little Rock) has long been the all-time wins leader in Arkansas, but that changed this past year when Pine Bluff moved ahead by two wins, 806 to 804.
800-win plateau
Five schools joined the 800-win club last year — Shelby (N.C.), Clinton (Okla.), Ada (Okla.), Lawton (Okla.) and Everett (Mass.).
Five more teams could eclipse the milestone this year, including Brockton (Mass.) with 798, Maryville (Tenn.) with 797, Washington (Sioux Falls, S.D.) with 795 as well as Long Beach Poly and Bakersfield.
How we compiled the list
The Top 50 list is compiled using numerous sources, including the National Federation of High School record book, the Football Friday Night website, which has continued the research done by historian Robert Dowcett.
Team websites were also used along with state association website record books. All sources are listed for each team.
Included for each team is the school's all-time record, the year the program started, a list of state champions, and a list of notable coaches. The team's dynasty ranking and dynasty record, compiled by CalPreps, is its ranking among all of the football programs in the country and that team's record for the past 15 seasons.
