The Fort Bend Independent School District announced Monday it will begin the 2020-21 school year with online learning only and without extracurricular activities.
The seventh-largest district in the state of Texas, Fort Bend ISD expects to begin classes Aug. 12.
Football and volleyball were slated to get underway with practices Aug. 3 and games Aug. 27.
The district announced it would phase in face-to-face instruction with small groups, leaving timelines for getting athletics and fine arts started indefinite.
Fort Bend ISD includes 11 high schools southwest of Houston. As of April 2020, the district served over 78,000 students and employed over 10,000 staff members.
It's a hot spot for big time athletes and powerhouse teams.
Fort Bend Travis (Richmond) produced twin basketball stars
Aaron and
Andrew Harrison, who went on to play for Kentucky. Last season,
Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City) reached the Class 5A Division II state championship game in football.
