ARLINGTON, Texas -- Normally it isn't a good idea to get into a scoring war with the
Refugio (Texas) Bobcats, a team averaging 61 points per game in the playoffs.
But the
Cisco (Texas) Loboes unleashed a big-play attack of their own, ringing up six touchdowns from a distance of 40 yards or more and shocked Refugio, 56-36, in the Class 5A Division II state championship game Thursday night at AT&T Stadium.
Refugio quarterback
Travis Quintanilla came into the game having already established state career records for passing yards and touchdown passes. In his final high school game, Quintanilla was 30-for-42 for 391 yards and two touchdowns. But he was also intercepted three times.
Colten Kent, Quintanilla's counterpart, was superb running the attack for Cisco (16-0), with four of his six completions going for touchdowns. The senior -- named the game's offensive MVP -- also chipped in with 139 rushing yards and another two scores.
Refugio (14-2) trailed only by seven at halftime, but Cisco struck for a pair of separation touchdowns in the first 69 seconds of the third period aided by a successful onside kick.
The teams met in the 2011 state final, Quintanilla's sophomore season, with Refugio winning 36-35.

Sophomore
Traion Smith rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Yoemen to a second-consecutive Class 2A Division I state crown.
Yoe (15-1) coach Rick Rhoades successfully gambled on a fake punt with the ball at midfield and the score tied in the final minutes of the third quarter.
Jason Kopriva's 16-yard pass from punt formation to
Colton Shuffield led to the go-ahead touchdown, a six-yard pass from Kopriva to
Aaron Sims in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
The game got away from run-oriented Wall (15-1) when fumbles ended two subsequent fourth-quarter possessions, setting up Smith's final touchdown runs.
Brent Matschek led Wall with 107 yards on seven carries including a 54-yard touchdown run.
Stamford (Texas) 41, Shiner (Texas) 28Quarterback
Bo Wimberly orchestrated a fourth-quarter comeback to nail down the Bulldogs' second-consecutive Class 1A Division I state title.
Stamford (14-1) trailed by 21 points in the second half until Wimberly came to the rescue with touchdown runs of 1, 53 and 12 yards, the latter the game-winner with 1:55 remaining. The senior also connected with
James Washington on a 60-yard scoring pass to tie the score at 28 with 3:42 remaining.
Wimberly, named the game MVP on both offense and defense, threw for 252 yards and added 110 yards on the ground.
Washington had two other touchdowns, a 63-yard pass reception on Stamford's first play and a clinching 77-yard interception return with 43 seconds remaining.
Marcus Coleman led Shiner (11-4) with 169 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Wellington (Texas) 42, Falls City (Texas) 20Jersey No. 13 was not bad luck for the Skyrockets'
Terry Gilbreath. The senior running back scored three touchdowns on the way to being named Class 1A Division II championship game offensive MVP.
Gilbreath scored on touchdown runs of 12 and 15 yards in the third period helping the Skyrockets (14-0) pad their eight-point halftime lead to 28-6.
Falls City (14-1) grabbed the early lead on a
Justin Twine touchdown run, but didn't score again until the game's final three minutes. Twine finished with 117 rushing yards and all three touchdowns for the Beavers.
Wellington's
Walker Williams was named defensive MVP with five tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a 23-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
