Brunswick (Ga.) scored the most points against the legendary
Valdosta (Ga.) football program in the last 47 years, yet still sustained a heartbreaking 64-62 overtime loss during a Friday night thriller at Valdosta.
Both teams scored in the final 1:38 of the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, knotted at 56-56.
Valdosta scored first in the overtime on a 15-yard pass from senior quarterback Ryan Whilden to senior tight end
Jay Rome. Whilden then added what proved to be the winning two-point conversion on a bootleg around right end to make it 64-56.
Brunswick came right back with a touchdown on a one-yard run by
Justin Coleman. However, senior linebacker Justin Williams forced senior quarterback Chris Anderson to fumble on a PAT passing attempt and the host Wildcats recovered to seal the victory.
Whilden passed for a career-high 335 yards and four touchdowns. Senior receiver Malcolm Mitchell snared five passes for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Rome also caught two touchdown passes. Senior running back Phillip Moore paced the ground attack with 141 yards and one touchdown. Reggie McQueen added a touchdown on a 95-yard kickoff return.
Anderson dominated with 506 total yards and six touchdowns in a losing effort. He completed 31 of 39 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns, with just two interceptions. He also ran 33 times for 147 yards and two additional touchdowns. Coleman, a University of Tennessee commitment, ran 17 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and also scored on a 15-yard pass.
