The Archbishop Mitty Monarchs completed a wire-to-wire season by capturing the California Division II state championship over Redlands East Valley on Saturday at the Bren Center on the UC Irvine campus.
The Monarchs began the season ranked No. 1 in the country by MaxPreps and that’s exactly where they finish. Mitty never moved from the No. 1 spot, due mainly to its outstanding starting lineup, five of whom earned All-American honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and also due to its performance against a tough schedule that include championships at the Mitty, Santa Barbara and Durango tournaments.
Newport Harbor also stayed in the top 10 after defeating Salinas in the California Division I state finals. The Sailors got hot at the end of the season, knocking off several top Southern Section teams, including Xcellent 25-ranked Dos Pueblos last week. Following are the final MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Volleyball Rankings for the 2009 season. Rachel Williams (center) of Archbishop Mitty celebrates
