Video: Sierra Canyon season-opening highlights See the Trailblazers beat Westlake 26-7.
About half of the teams in the MaxPreps Small Schools Top 25 national high school football rankings were in action last week with preseason No. 1 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) maintaining its top spot with a win over Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.).
Most impressive win: Southern Columbia 36, Hammond (Columbia, S.C.) 0. While Southern Columbia is the two-time defending Class 2A state champion in Pennsylvania, Hammond had some credentials of its own coming into the game with a SCISA 3A state championship in 2018. The game also featured the No. 2 recruit in the nation in Hammond's Jordan Burch and the No. 3 recruit in Southern Columbia's Julian Fleming. The Tigers overwhelmed the Skyhawks with the shutout win, extending their win streak to 33 straight games.
Game of the Week: Christian Academy-Louisville 6, South Oldham 0. In a game that featured tremendous defense on both sides of the ball, Christian Academy, ranked No. 1 in the Louisville area by the Courier Journal, needed a touchdown in overtime to pull off the win over South Oldham, one of the top-ranked Class 5A teams in the state.
Game to watch: Central Catholic (Modesto) vs. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.). The Raiders are taking on all comers this year. After playing a tough Clovis West team close in a 26-22 loss, Central Catholic takes on the No. 1 team in Northern California in the De La Salle Spartans. De La Salle has not lost a Northern California contest since 1991.
Best individual performance: Ty Keyes already ranks as one of the all-time leading passers in Mississippi history with over 8,000 yards combined in his freshman and sophomore season. He added to that total with 341 yards and four touchdowns in Taylorsville's season-opening win.
The Small Schools Top 25 is open to schools that generally play in enrollment divisions with less than 1,000 students. Some California schools with under 1,000 students that play in competition-based playoff divisions that mostly include large enrollment schools (such as Sierra Canyon and Grace Brethren) are also included. Teams are ranked based on their MaxPreps computer ranking, which is listed along with their current record.
