Florida high school basketball: Cameron Boozer leads Columbus to 45-44 victory over No. 17 Dr. Phillips to capture Class 7A state title

No. 4 Calvary Christian Academy captures second straight FHSAA state title with a 74-58 victory over Andrew Jackson.

Championship Saturday arrived in Florida high school basketball. Action tipped off Wednesday at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland and ran through Saturday with FHSAA champions crowned in seven classifications.

In the most highly anticipated game of the weekend, Columbus (Miami) upset No. 17 Dr. Phillips (Orlando) 45-44 to capture the Class 7A state title. Freshman sensation Cameron Boozer led the way with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the victory.

Columbus knocked off Lake Worth 69-54 in the other Class 7A semifinal led by Cameron Boozer 18 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks.

No. 4 Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale) closed out a special season with a 74-58 victory over Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) in the Class 4A championship game to repeat as state champions. The Eagles were paced by Michigan signee Gregg Glenn who finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Calvary Christian Academy previously knocked off Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) 62-60 in the Class 4A semifinals led by UCF-bound Taylor Hendricks and LSU pledge Marvel Allen who chipped in 19 points apiece.

Dr. Phillips took down Seminole (Sanford) 67-52 in the Class 7A semifinals behind a game-high 27 points from Mississippi State signee Riley Kugel.

Other state champions crowned this weekend were Martin County (Stuart, Fla.) who captured the Class 6A state title with a 53-49 win over Ponte Vedra (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), Stranahan (Fort Lauderdale) who won the Class 5A state title with a 64-40 victory over St. Petersburg, Florida State University High School (Tallahassee) who claimed the Class 3A title with a 67-66 over Riviera Prep (Miami), Orlando Christian Prep (Orlando) who repeated as Class 2A champions with a 66-49 win over Sagemont (Weston) and Bradford (Starke) who captured the Class 1A title with a 64-44 triumph against Paxton.

Defending champions include Dr. Phillips (7A), Bartow (6A), Pembroke Pines Charter (5A), Pine Crest (4A), Calvary Christian Academy (3A), Orlando Christian Prep (2A) and Wildwood (1A).
