Video: Eric Melesio's highlights vs. St. Margaret's
See the Norte Vista running back in action as he guns for the national rushing record.
After putting up one of the best single-game rushing totals of the season, Eric Melesio of Norte Vista now has a chance at knocking off one of the longest standing records in national high school football history.
Melesio ran for 563 yards on 43 carries with eight touchdowns in a 62-56 win over St. Margaret's in the Southern Section Division 7 football playoffs. That total puts Melesio's season totals at 3,945 yards on the year.
With Norte Vista advancing to the section semifinals, Melesio has a chance to possibly play four more games, assuming his team reaches a state bowl game. If that happens, he has a good chance of surpassing the national record of 4,756 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, set in 1950. He needs just over 800 yards to break the record, but he has rushed for over 900 yards combined in his past two games.
Melesio's performance highlights this week's national high school football stat stars.
Other noteworthy performances this week include:
Journey Brown of Meadville rushing for 391 yards and five touchdowns in a 76-29 win over Hollidaysburg. Brown is remembered as the player who rushed for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns in his team's 107-90 win over DuBois last year.
Tristan Miller of Santa Clarita Christian had the fourth-highest single game passing total in state history with 636 yards in a 61-47 loss to South El Monte.
Nick Gerber of Levelland broke the state record for touchdown passes in a season with 73. He threw for 502 yards and six touchdowns in an 82-73 win over Decatur. With 5,036 yards on the season, Gerber needs just 409 yards to surpass the state record of 5,444 yards by Shelton Eppler.
Gerber will go for the record this week against Andrews, whose quarterback Triston Williams also made the stat stars list this week. He threw for 458 yards and six touchdowns in a 59-38 playoff win over Brownwood.
