Video: Derrick Henry breaks rushing record
See the Titans star in action as prep standout in Florida.
Derrick Henry of Yulee rushed for 485 yards in a playoff win over Taylor County on Nov. 16, 2012, breaking the career rushing yardage total of Ken Hall of Sugarland (Texas) and media proclaimed Henry the all-time leading career rusher in high school history.
Except that he wasn't. At least not yet.
While Hall held the record for most career yardage in a four-year career with 11,232 yards, Kelvin Taylor of Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.), who played five years on the varsity, passed Hall on Oct. 29, 2012, when he rushed for 201 yards in a 55-20 win over Summit Christian. By Nov. 16, when Henry passed Hall, Taylor actually finished the night with 11,903 career yards to lead Henry by nearly 300 yards.
The following week, Henry had 189 yards in a playoff win over Gadsden County while Taylor finished his career with 160 yards in a playoff loss to Dade Christian. That put Taylor at 12,063 career yards to Henry's 11,801.
Henry finally overtook Taylor on Nov. 30 when he rushed for 317 yards in a playoff loss to Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.). The effort gave Henry 12,124 career yards and the all-time national career rushing record.
Ken Hall's career rushing yardage record of 11,232 yards, set in 1953, lasted 60 years before Taylor broke it and extended it to 12,063 yards. How long did it take for Henry to break Taylor's record? Seven days.
Henry, Taylor and Hall are the top three rushers on MaxPreps' list of the Top 100 all-time career rushing yardage leaders in high school history. The list also includes Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith of Escambia (Pensacola, Fla.), Dallas Cowboy Tavon Austin of Dunbar (Baltimore) and former NCAA All-American Toby Gerhart of Norco (Calif.).
The list was compiled using the MaxPreps leaderboards, the National Federation of High Schools record book, state association record books, the Georgia High School Football Historians website and Joe Lee Smith's Texas High School Football History website. The totals include all varsity seasons including those played by eighth-graders. The NFHS record book does not recognize yardage gained by an eighth-grade player on the varsity level.
