The ninth-annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard visited
Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) to honor the school's championship football team. The Trojans were being honored at halftime of the boys' basketball game that night. They finished No. 9 in the country out of more than 16,000 football programs!
Because of its national ranking, the team was receiving a trophy and Nationally Ranked banner. MaxPreps and the South Carolina National Guard displayed the prestigious Minuteman Trophy before the varsity game so fans and students alike could see the football team's accomplishment. Then, Sgt. Sanz of the South Carolina National Guard distributed Tour of Champions commemorative shirts as well as National Guard water bottles to every player on the team.
At halftime, Sgt. Sanz presented Coach Kyle Richardson and the team, who were all wearing their Tour of Champions shirts, with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. Coach Richardson talked about what it means to be part of the football team, and more importantly receiving the honor from the National Guard again. This was the second time the Trojans had been honored on the Tour of Champions. The last time Northwestern received this national recognition was in 2010.
After the presentation, we talked to the assistant coaches and the captain. Everyone expressed how grateful they were for the honor and how this will now motivate them for next year. Parents thanked the National Guard for the recognition and all of the hard work they do for our country. The parents also shared with us how honored their kids felt. Then, the players as well as parents and Northwestern students took pictures with the trophy.
Congratulations to the Northwestern Trojans and we hope to see you for a third time on the Tour of Champions next year!
