Video: Dramatic cross country finishRiverton's Sean Rausch steps up to help a teammate.Wednesday's Utah cross country state championships in Salt Lake City provided one of those special moments in high school sports.
Just 200 meters from the finish of the course, junior Blake Lewis of
Riverton suffered an injury.
"I started to limp because my leg began to hurt," Lewis said. "Suddenly, I heard my leg snap, and it sounded like a tree branch. Then my teammate Sean Rausch, a senior, came up behind me and picked me up. He carried me the entire 200 meters to the finish line. I later found out that I had broken my tibia."
Lewis and Rausch were both disqualified from the competition due to the act of compassion. But Rausch put the team over himself.
"He told me he loved me," Lewis said. "He also said we are a team and we are all in this together. I felt so loved that he did that for me. It's not all about racing; it's about something greater."
