MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
San Clemente (Calif.) Tritons have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 12th year honoring football.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Tritons ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
For the first time in the school's 52-year history San Clemente's football team ended the season as the
CIF Division 1-A high school state champion. On Saturday, Dec. 17 the Tritons snapped defending state champion Del Oro's 11-game postseason win streak with a 22-17 comeback win for the title at Sacramento State University.
The Eagles held a lead over San Clemente for the majority of the state final, but the Tritons relentlessly battled back and erased a 17-point deficit. The Tritons took their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter and kept
the lead to capture the state championship.
San Clemente proved to be a tough opponent on the road as they captured the
CIF-Southern Section Division 2,
Southern Regional and
state championships away from their hometown.
At the end of the Tritons' historic season, they were highly ranked by MaxPreps —
No.1 in Southern Section Division 2,
No.6 in the Southern Section,
No.9 in the state,
No.15 in the West Region and
No.66 in the nation.
These incredible season achievements have earned the San Clemente Tritons an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the football team, coaching staff, students and fans on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 12:10 p.m. during a school assembly in the main gym.
