The Blue-Gold all-star basketball games were held last Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. Delaware’s most outstanding basketball players were divided into two teams based on the location of the school they attend; all-stars from southern schools made up the Gold team while northern schools represented the Blue team in this annual event.
Kyan Andrews of Woodbridge led the Gold team to a 114-107 overtime victory in the boys’ game.
Andrews seemed to get stronger as the game went on, finishing with a game-high 19 points. Ian Wharton of Middletown also stood out for the Gold team, adding 16 points and icing the game for the southern all stars by hitting clutch free throws with seven seconds left in overtime.
The Blue team was led in scoring by a pair of Richardsons: Nafis of Hodgson had 17 points while Demetrus Richardson of McKean contributed 13.
The Blue team was able to put up a 94-53 win in the girls’ game despite the absence of All-American Elena Delle Donne.
Jasmine Gibson of Sanford, Kyra McGriff of McKean and Brittany Neill of Archmere each led the north in scoring with 11 points a piece. Symone Woody of St. Elizabeth and Shannon O’Hanlon of Ursuline both added 10 points, helping the Blue team score 57 points in the second half.
The Gold team was led in scoring by Joycelyn Downs of William Penn and Ashley Thompson of Caesar Rodney, who put up eight points a piece against a strong Blue team defense.
Boys Lacrosse: Charter on a Roll
The Charter School of Wilmington was able to hand St. Mark’s its first loss of the season on Saturday. Charter outscored St. Mark’s 5-1 in the third and fourth quarters to win the game, 9-5, and improve its record to 4-0. St. Mark’s was limited to six shots in the game.
Although the Spartans scored on five of those six shots, Charter’s offense provided enough goal support to come away with a big win.
Charter faced Glasgow on Monday afternoon and was able to continue its winning ways in a decisive 20-1 victory. With the win, Charter now sits at 5-0.
Coach Bill Squires has Charter off to a strong start this season; his team has outscored its opponents by 74-11, including victories over St. Elizabeth, Delcastle and Concord. This hot young team will face Tower Hill on Thursday.
Baseball: Wilmington Friends Stays Relevant
James Baczkowski recorded his first win of the season as the Wilmington Friends baseball team came away with a 5-4 win over St. Andrews on Saturday.
Baczkowski got off to a rocky start, giving up four runs in the first inning. The junior made up for his early trouble on the mound by going 2-for-3 at the plate and pitching three scoreless innings before he was relieved after five full innings of work.
Geoff Butterworth stepped up and maintained the one run lead to earn his first save of the season, improving the Quakers' record to 3-2.
Greg Miraglia backed up Wilmington Friends solid pitching efforts by driving in three runs. Coach Robert King will look to keep the ball rolling in a home game against Tower Hill on Tuesday afternoon. The game will be the first of three scheduled games between the Quakers and the Hillers this season.
Girls Soccer: A.I. DuPont Gets the Job Done
The A.I. DuPont girls’ soccer team was able to get its first win of the season in a 3-0 victory over Tower Hill on Monday. Christine Neal recorded a nine-save shutout while senior captain Kelsey McCormick scored two of the Tigers' three second-half goals. DuPont will try to improve its 1-2 record in a home game against Archmere on Wednesday.
