ARLINGTON, Texas – Welcome to a live blog throughout the day from hard-to-truly-put-into words Cowboys Stadium.
I've been lucky enough to cover all four times the No. 1 and 2 teams have faced off in a high school regular-season showdown.
One of those times was nearby in Dallas at SMU, where Northwestern (Miami, Fla.) upended the local kids Carroll (Southlake, Texas) in 2008.
This, however, is the first time we've seen two No. 1s face off. Trinity-Euless is No. 1 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings, conducted by our football editor Stephen Spiewak.
Shiloh Christian (Springdale, Ark.) is No. 1 in our MaxPreps Freeman computer rankings.
See preview to this big matchup. See preview for
the entire Herbstreit event.
Something has to give.
Let's get it going:
FIRST QUARTERTRINITY 7, SHILOH CHRISTIAN 0: Well that didn't take long. Trinity marched right down the field, going 51 yards in just three plays to take a 7-0 lead. Tevin Williams scored on a 7-yard run just 56 seconds into play.
Shiloh jumped offside on an onside kick try, Trinity's Jaydee Pathoummachith recovered and the Trojans were on their way. Tevin Williams, who was the star here last year, went 24 yards around right end, after an another offside call, Kailahi Kautai completed a 15-yard pass to Brandon Carter, before Williams went over the right side for a 7-yard TD.
Wow, that was quick.
TRINITY 14, SHILOH 0 (8:43 left): Wow again. Second drive easier and longer than first. Three more plays, 71 yards, a 3-yard TD run by QB Kailahi Kautai cruises in from 3. The TD set up by beautiful 50-yard reverse pass from Carter - what doesn't this guy do? - to Garland Radar.
TRINITY 14, SHILOH 7 (8:31 left): We have a Shiloh sighting and some hope. Garrett Harper goes right and sprints 93 yards for a TD on ensuing kickoff. Looked like he stepped out of bounds, but glad he didn't. We may have a ball game.
TRINITY 21, SHILOH 7 (8:19 left): Maybe not. John Brown, yet another big Trinity weapon, whips easily around the left edge for a 60-yard TD.
TRINITY 24, SHILOH 7 (1:25 left): Another 72-yard drive for the Trojans, but this one stalls and Tony Perez kicks 30 yard field goal. Whew, can't keep up.
TRINITY 24, SHILOH 14 (0:29): This isn't a football game, it's not even a track meet. It's a game of street hoop. Kiehl Frazier shows why he's one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country, avoiding a huge, rolling left and finding Zann Jones on a 69-yard TD.
End of the first quarter. My fingers are tired.
SECOND QUARTERTRINITY 31, SHILOH 14 (11:34 left in second): This is just way too easy.
Terrence Tusan finishes 61-yard drive by coasting home from 10.
TRINITY 31, SHILOH 20 (10:09 left in second): Are you kidding? Another TD. Frazier goes deep to Jones again on an 83-yard TD. According
to Bo Carter, the best SID/all-around-good-guy in the country, we're on
pace for 96-56 final. That's on the first-quarter pace.
TRINITY
38, SHILOH 20 (8:39 left in 2nd): Carter may not be far off. Williams
goes 40 yards for another TD. This is getting ridiculous.
TRINITY 45, SHILOH 20 (6:23 left in 2nd): If just joining on, that's no misprint. Trinity scores again on Tusan 4-yard run. It
took just 2 plays to go 50 yards, the first perhaps the play of the
game, a 46-yard reverse pass from versatile Carter to Sivad Boykin.
We're halfway through the second quarter and Trinity already has 296 yards rushing and 419 total. Crazy.
A PUNT! Might be the biggest
turnaround of game. Trinity actually punts with 1:13 left in the half.
This after defense held on downs at 14.
TRINITY
53, SHILOH 20 (0:28 left in half): Well, they punted, then the defense
gets involved, a 69-yard interception return by Q'Niko Thomas. A
Frazier pass glances off hands of Jones, Thomas grabs, avoids 2 big
hits and goes the distance. A 2-point conversion - why? - follows.
Symbolically a huge hit from Trinity strong safety Ilau Moeakiola on David Tyler ends the half. TRINITY 53, SHILOH 20.FIRST HALF NOTES: First of all, in 27 years of covering high school sports, I've never seen anything like this. And in 27 years, while sitting in a press box with a computer, I've never NOT been able to keep up with the action. Basketball yes, football no. This is absolutely insane. ... It's apparent that Shiloh is not deep or fast enough to stay with Trinity, but that being said, Trinity is just an offensive machine. Yes, Shiloh isn't tackling well or getting to the edge, but the Trojans simply have so many weapons and coach Steve Lineweaver and offensive coordinator Chris Jensen are extremely inventive. I expected Shiloh to have all the wrinkles - and they've shown plenty including using the famed A-11 offense which splits the line of scrimmage - but Trinity has shown some fantastic variations, utilizing Oklahoma-bound Brandon Carter in every way possible, including a pair of reverse pass completions for 96 yards. Neither went for touchdowns but each set up short scores.
FIRST-HALF STATS: These are game numbers folks: Trinity has piled up 439 yards, including 298 on the ground. Tusan (8-128) and Williams (10-111) are both over 100 yards and each rushed for two scores. ... Through the air, Trinity is 7 of 8 for 141 more yards. ... Shiloh hasn't exactly been shut down. The Auburn-bound Frazier is 6 of 13 but for 171 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jones who has four catches for 166 yards. ... Shiloh has 217 yards. ... There have been five touchdowns 60 yards or longer thus far. .... Trinity has gone 51, 71, 60, 56, 60 and 50 yards on its touchdown drives. The total amount of plays in those drives is 17 plays. Again, insane.
THIRD QUARTERTRINITY
53, SHILOH 26 (7:04 left in third): Picking up where we left. Shiloh
goes 68 yards capped by leaping 9-yard TD by Frazier. Another missed xp doesn't help. No quit in Shiloh.
TRINITY
60, SHILOH 30 (6:52 left in third): No letup in Trinity either. Not
again. First play, fire hydrant Boykin goes 58 yards for TD. You
can't arm tackle Boykin. At 5-4, 200 is a load. He transferred in from
Ohio over the summer. As if Trinity needs another stud.TRINITY
66, SHILOH 26 (27 sec left in 3rd): Trojans insert 4th string RB
Brandon Reeves. First carry, 39-yard TD. These guys are scary good. End of third quarter. Trinity ran off just five plays in third quarter for 126 yards and two TDs. End of third quarter. Need just three more points to break the composite Herbstreit record of 94.
TRINITY
74, SHILOH 26 (6:41 left in game): Another reserve, another TD. Jeremy
Louis sweeps left end for score. Last PAT was no good.
TRINITY
73, SHILOH 26. Check that folks. Scoring so much, scoreboard can't keep
track. It's actually 73-26. Scorekeepers missed a PAT miss.
TRINITY
80, SHILOH 26 (338): This is beyond frightening. Boykin breaks two
absolutely sure tackles, goes 32 yards for another TD. If there a few more minutes,
Trinity might break the cumulative Herbstreit record of 94 points in a
game. Its school record is 88 set here.
Trinity
scored 88-24 win at Cowboys Stadium over Flower Mound in 1st round of
the 09 playoffs. Nobody thought it would threaten that today.
FINAL: Trinity 80, Shiloh 26. Unofficially, Trinity finished with 682 yards, 559 rushing. Come back later for much more.
